I honestly have no idea why Obama would nominate Hagel. He is a Republican, he has baggage, and it isn't as though he has run anything. Why not go with somebody like Jim Webb who is a Democrat with relevant experience.

I actually have quite a bit of respect for Webb. He was a Naval secretary under Reagan, and I believe honestly left the GOP over legitimate opposition to the Iraq War.

A clue, a clue... [Blues Clues TV show reference]

Iran State TV Praises Obama’s ‘anti-Israel’ Hagel selection

Iran’s state-run Press TV praised President Barack Obama for his likely selection of the “anti-Israel” former Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel to head the Defense Department, according to a report published Saturday.

...
Hagel has long advocated for direct, unconditional talks with Iran as well as with the terror group Hamas.

Hagel in 2008 was reported to be “solely responsible” for blocking a bill that would have tightened economic sanctions in Iran, according to the Huffington Post.

He also voted against renewing the Iran Sanctions Libya Act in 2001. The measure would have prevented Iran and Libya from securing funds that would have been used to acquire weapons of mass destruction and support terrorist operations.

Hagel was just one of two Senators to vote against the act.

OK - so he is pro-Iran, and anti-Israel. Should make things pretty clear.

This fully explains why Hagel is being opposed by some Democrats AND Republicans.

Chuck Hagel and liberals: what are the priorities? | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

There's a reason Hagel's nomination has become so intensely controversial and such a vicious target for war-cheering neocons such as Bill Kristol and the Washington Post Editorial Board. It's because Hagel is one of the very, very few prominent national politicians from either party who has been brave enough to question and dissent from the destructive bipartisan orthodoxies on foreign policy. What plausible Democratic candidate for this job has been willing publicly to point out that the US and Israel are separate countries and American interests should trump Israeli interests when they conflict, or to advocate for direct negotiations with Hamas, or to candidly point out that America's Middle East wars are fought for oil, or to condemn the power of the pro-Israel lobby within both parties, or to harshly point out the stupidity of attacking Iran rather than cowardly mouth the "all-options-on-the-table" platitude?

Why shouldnt talking with someone be unconditional? Its just talking?
Whats AIPAC got to be afraid of?

Dems nominate Republicans in that position to insulate themselves. If i were the president, i'd do the same thing. Plus Hagel is a decorated combat veteran. Now the Republicans have to tread lightly when they try to tag the SecDef as some sort of anti-military liberal with no military experience. Can't do that with Hagel.

BTW, Hagel has no more baggage than anyone else. If AIPAC doesn't like him, i love him.

Slander... ??

If he is pro-Iran, and his votes as a Senator support that - there is no slander. It is what it is. He should own it and let the votes fall where they fall.
