"It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliance with any portion of the foreign world.... Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rivalship, interest, humour or caprice?"
Why is it lame duck Presidents farewell addresses, when they are at the greatest point of honesty, go painfully ignored or forgotten?
With all the Constitutionalist bickering and interpretation on this site...how about holding one statement by the first founder at face value? We went way off the beaten path.
Washington would have opposed intervention in any world war, also thought the party system he opposed, many other things. He also grew hemp and distilled liquor, speculation is he smoke marijuana.
But men who lived in 1776 could not understand everything in the world in 2013. Hell, my grandparents can't figure out a smart phone and a computer.
It's just such intense irony how clearly he stated that America needed to preserve values that set them apart from the rest of the Eastern world. And now all roads are converging and a global governance is emerging.
And the idea of global order was definitely not foreign to these people.
But here we are today and people are bastardizing these peoples words to serve their trivial preferences. As if we've come to the point where now these little social values need to be refined in the face of something much more dreadful.

The biggest complaint of his time, and Europe was oligarchy and their endless global expansion. He would be rolling in his grave at the American empire and global military we have today.
He wasn't talking about universal healthcare or rational gun control, because those things didn't exist during the 18th century.
When Mr. Washington accepted the post of Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, he refused to accept a salary; rather, he only requested that Congress reimburse him for his expenses. Congress agreed. What a patriotic fellow, they thought.
Well! Congress was horrified when General Washington submitted his expense report. I had read once that it was for $30,000. This link below declares it was $160,000 (NOT adjusting for today's dollars).
Anyway, upon becoming the first President, Mr. Washington offered to forego a salary: just pay my expenses. The members of Congress declined the offer and insisted he take a fixed salary, and pay for his own expenses.
I believe this was the last example of Congress acting wise.

Not much room for interpretation here.
OUr place in the world changed from insignificance to primacy. That is why his statements no longer are valid.
If we aren't the world's "big stick", somebody else will, and make no mistake, you will NOT like it.

I think he was warning about the "primacy" part.... His words are very valid.
