The purpose of the Second Amendment is to secure all the other rights listed in the Constitution.
No one doubts the US military has the ability to inflict heavy casualties on its own citizens or that the federal government could imprison millions if they desired to do so, but countering that isn't how the Second Amendment protects our rights.
It works by making a people who refuse to submit to tyranny ungovernable, and to that end, it doesn't matter what measures are used against US citizens.
The other problem you have is that the US military will refuse to obey orders that violate the rights of the people.
That leaves a handful of federal thugs in a few armored vehicles trying to forcibly collect 300 million privately owned firearms.
Know this: The surest and swiftest way to lose your right to have a gun - not to mention the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness - is to point it at your government. Those who run afoul of the law, will suffer its sanctions.
