Judging by the thousands of people killed by drunk drivers every year in this country, which is much higher than the ones killed by firearms... What do you think I would choose?
Look the government is the problem. They don't even want to prosecute those who commit felon during the current background check. In 2009, 80,000+ offenses but only 44 get persecuted! What makes you think a background check on private sales would do?
Enforce the current law before you add more laws that you don't plan to enforce!
In Obama's defense, that was one of the things he says he wants to do. I guess the big question is why that wasn't done over the last 4 years? Why did it take a tragedy to get the man to do his job?
I know we already have some federal checks regarding mental illness on a few weapons, I wouldn't mind enforcing and expanding that. This seems to be where most of the problems reside especially with the latest mass shootings and all. I think LE, shrinks and families know who is a danger and who isn't. Nobody's talking about someone who goes back ten times and checks to see if the coffee pot is turned off or not, or someone who is going through a temp slump. Keeping weapons out of the hands of the seriously mentally ill seems like a duh factor too me.
NRA is against what some of you were saying here and rightfully so.
Without due process of the law, how can we determine someone is mentally ill? How about this, I think you are nuts, so you lose all your rights just because I think so?
good points. who is going to make that judgement, and on what basis?
if someone believes they have been wrongly classified as mentally ill, what options do they have?
and so forth.

Yet, none of those mass shooters were determined to be "seriously mentally ill" before they committed any crimes.
And you think some type of magic is going to occur because we're creating a database ?

I wonder how long it will take for liberals to get all "up in arms" about "violating the rights and privacy" of the insane?
Ok - yes, go ahead and invoke Godwins Law on me but I will still point out when Hitler started rounding people up - the first group to go was the mentally disabled!!!
I wonder what happens if a mistake is made and a stable person is prevented from buying a gun. Someone with no history of mental illness whatsoever. I was mistakenly added to the no-fly list a while back because someone with my same name caused a disturbance on a plane. I told the lady I wasn't even in that city at the time and I could provide proof. They weren't even going to let me fly just because someone with the same name as me caused a disturbance. Tyranny here we come.
The government does make screw-ups. I look for a mentally ill person to still be able to buy a gun. Like let's say a person doesn't seek treatment for his or her illness or something like that.
In the glorious people's democratic socialist republic of america, everything is perfect.
If you object to government, you are obviously not well.
If you act in defiance of government, you are mentally ill.
