As a strong supporter of gun rights, I was actually surprised to see some sensible things in Obama's EOs today. In particular:

1) Adding the mentally ill to the NICS database. Seems like a simple, common sense idea. Someone "adjudicated mentally incompetent" is already banned from purchasing a firearm.

2) Actually prosecuting those that lie "on a background check". OK, that's stupid, you don't lie on the NICS check, that's between the gun dealer and the FBI. You can lie on the form 4473, which is a federal felony, long past time it was actually enforced. So if an illegal immigrant, felon or user of illegal drugs lies on the form, they can be prosecuted. Enforcing existing gun laws...what a concept.

3) Adding more "resource officers" (aka armed police) to schools. Also hard to argue with this.

I was actually somewhat pleased myself.

I think most of it is symbolic and won't do much good, but some of it probably will help, and it's a step in a more reasonable direction from what we've been hearing.

I am having trouble wrapping my head around something. Obama's supporters seem pretty happy and supportive of these actions today. I have yet to see any of those I identify as liberals on this board criticize them.

What is odd is that, two weeks ago, when the NRA made EXACTLY THE SAME SUGGESTIONS they were somehow crazy, self serving, radical and unreasonable. Now that Obama suggests them...they are reasonable, brilliant ideas.

Obama missed a simple step he could have taken. One that would provide a deterrence to criminals, without infringing on the rights of the law abiding. The idea...make theft of a firearm a federal felony with a mandatory 10 year sentence. Same for possession of a stolen firearm. Of course, punishing criminals doesn't sit well with his supporters.

Well sadly, such is politics in America.

There's probably a good chunk of right wing nut jobs who are doing the same in reverse.

I think any prosecution for a denial on a 4473 should be after an extensive appeal, otherwise I reluctantly agree...

Id feel better if Eric Holder was removed and prosecuted, I cant endorse anything he recommends, he's a criminal...

I'm often identified as one of those "right wing nut jobs". Even though it's Obama presenting these ideas, they are still good ones.

Don't get me wrong...he has plenty of really dumb ideas. Like the idea that criminals that ignore laws against rape, murder or robbery will somehow pay attention to gun laws. Like the idea that a gang banger selling a stolen gun will take it to a gun dealer and do a background check when selling it to a fellow gang banger. Like the idea that restricting the largest selling sporting rifle sold in this country will not impact law abiding people. These will have to go through the normal process for passing laws. At least he has recognized that he is the president and not an emperor...I was starting to wonder for a while.

Oh of course.

I'm not his biggest fan overnight but I will commend him for being reasonable and allowing congress to do what they do. He is for some level of gun control and I disagree but we're not hearing the type of rhetoric and dishonesty from him that we're hearing from many in that camp.
