I've never heard about individuals getting upset about being wished Merry Christmas, or legislative anything.
As someone pointed out, several companies asked their employees to wish customers Happy Holidays (presumably to be more inclusive to other faiths) and a bunch of people got their knickers in a twist, led by sensationalist radio hosts looking for ratings (Bill O'Reilly, I'm looking at you).
The ones whining aren't the non-Christians. They never were.

It is Merry Christmas -
Schools should be able to have CHRISTMAS activities - including the singing of CHRISTMAS caroles - and not just "jingle bells" - a little "Silent Night" never hurt anyone
CHRISTMAS displays should be allowed on public property -

I am Jewish (non-practicing) and much prefer "Merry Christmas". In fact I find the phrase "Happy Holidays" to be offensive because it has become so over the top PC in recent years.

I dont celebrate Christmas, it is such a dumb holiday, everything is closed, do you know you celebrate the birth of some person who probably didnt exist, and if he did exist he had a accepted mental illness(which is still accepted and the norm today)?
Actaully this supposed "Jesus" wasnt even born on December 25th, Just ban this dumb holiday, the same crap starts every year, actually it is starting early, it usually happens after thanksgiving
And notice the instigating always happens from a Christian?

Why do people get so offended at "Happy Holidays"?
Doesn't anyone else remember the song "Happy Holidays" from the best loved Christmas movie of all time, "White Christmas"? It wasn't offensive then (50+ years ago), why should it be now?
I find the irony rich that "christian conservative" types get offended that ACLU libs force their beliefs on them, and respond with militant "This is what you HAVE to say to me in December" proclamations.
You might as well start a thread about those a$$holes who say "good morning" instead of "how do you do?" because we of course are not "mourning" anything.
What kind of a jerk dictates what kind of polite greeting you can give people? And we wonder why folks don't seem as "nice" anymore?

Well, the entire reason I brought this up is because we are not allowed to say Merry Christmas at my work anymore. The Child Center is only allowed to paint Happy Holidays on their windows this year. I can't say Merry Christmas to a customer or guest in front of my manager.
And I agree, screw those a$$holes who force others to give out the greeting they want us to give out.

The difference between then and now is that back then you could say it as well as Merry Christmas and neither would be offensive. Say either one today and someone could be offended. It comes from people trying to tell others how they can think, just as you mentioned.
I find the irony rich that "limousine liberal" types get offended that Christians and all others want to just live with their set of beliefs and while the ACLU libs force their beliefs on them, and respond with militant "This is what you HAVE to say to me in December" proclamations.

Long before the PC crap started,
If it's BEFORE Thanksgiving I say Happy Holidays because that will include Turkey Day, Christmas and New Years.
If it's AFTER Turkey Day, it's Merry Christmas and/or Happy New Year.
If I know that they are Jewish, I will wish them Happy Hanukah.
My brother converted to Judism a few years back and now calls the Christmas season "the holidays." He still comes for Christmas day to please my mom. The last couple years he will ask me what I'm doing for the HOLIDAYS..I know he means Christmas but just to be a brat, I start telling him everything I have planned for every holiday.
What are sisters for anyway.
