Whoever wrote that article seems to be not entirely informed on the matter. When Mitt Romney said that about Jeep, he already knew they were going to build Jeeps in China. They are not moving U.S. production of Jeeps to China. They are just creating additional manufacturing plants in China. Big difference.

Mitt ran ads saying that auto jobs are going to China.
The auto leaders came out and called out Mitt's lie.
Mitt insist it's true and double down on the lie.
Their campaign kept those ads going.

He and his campaign lied.

"Public expressed collective outrage"? That's essentially wishcasting on the part of PolitiFact, nor are they accurately representing what Mitt Romney said in the ad. In fact, here's PolitiFact's original "fact check" on the matter:

Romney made the remark during a campaign stop in Ohio and criticized Obama for the move. In response, PolitiFact called Romney a liar and lambasted The Drudge Report for picking up the story when Jeep's parent company denied it. However, Reuters is reporting 100,000 Jeeps will be made in China during 2014. PolitiFact, instead of immediately apologizing, instead conceded the "Lie of the Year" was based in an actual "grain of truth" — then backtracked by saying Jeep building cars in China is a good thing because it’s for a Chinese market, so it basically doesn’t count for the spin they put on Romney's comments.
