That wasn't out of context, you and many other posters are dismissing his comments because he's not an economist or tax expert etc.
Basically, none of you wants to discuss the very real, proven actions taken by the very wealthy to legally (ethically is an entirely other story) avoid taxation. That includes corporations too.
Instead all I'm hearing is how this sports bozo doesn't know anything. Oh, he knows enough to listen to his paid tax experts, you can guarantee that.
So go on patting yourselves on the back about higher rates while they just slip out through the loopholes.
You'll note I'm not even opposing the higher taxation but rather the lip-service towards it while in reality people are effectively skirting it.
I now leave you and the others to your hand-waving and refusal to discuss the topic because of your political entrenchment.
The poster I replied to said that Mr.Mickelson's opinion carried more weight than this other C-D poster's did. I showed how inane that sounded with my example. So, yes, you did take what I posted out of context. I accept your apology
I like where Phil says 'Right now, I'm like many Americans who are trying to understand the new tax laws.' Yeah, no. He makes $60 Million/ year. The average American makes less that $60 thousand. And their federal taxes are the lowest in a generation and are untouched by the new law, save for the reversion to the standard Social Security percentage.
So lets do a little math. At the marginal rate, Phil would have to pay around $7 million in CA state tax. that's a lot of money, about $2M more than under the tax code he has been living under in CA for his whole life. ( I'm assuming he doesn't have complicated but legal tax- aversion schemes in place...which he no doubt does)If he earns $60 M / year, he can afford it without blinking an eye. But it's his choice if it's worth uprooting his life to prove a point, or if the thought of surviving on only $40 or $50 million /year is too unsettling. Of course, he might have to sell another patch on his little polo shirt to make up the staggering loss.
I must say, whatever his decision is, his 'douche' quotient spiked higher than his tax rate with this outburst.
Seems like he should have learned more about the tax issues before he threatened to leave the country.

Phil Mickelson has apologized for saying Sunday that he would be making "drastic changes" in his life due to new federal and state tax laws that he said would take away more than 60% of his income.
Those comments have led to speculation that the San Diego native might move from California or even retire from golf.
Mickelson said in a statement to Fox News on Monday that he was sorry if he "upset or insulted" anyone with his comments and that he is currently trying to learn more about the new tax laws in order to make informed decisions.
.....................
He added: "I certainly don’t have a definitive plan at this time, but like everyone else I want to make decisions that are best for my future and my family," he said.
The four-time major championship winner is scheduled to hold a press conference Wednesday at Torrey Pines.
There is NO POSSIBLE WAY that Phil Mickelson is paying 62% of his income in taxes. None. He's lying or he is the stupidest golfer in the history of the sport.
Ha! Let he move to Florida and leave one the the premier places to reside in the USA, leave friends and family he grew up with. He can move to the South Florida area with all those other transients, and snow birds driving 25 mph down the boulevards. Live behind a gated community to separate himself from all that Florida "culture". He'll enjoy his boat for about 3 Months before he gets extremely bored with it.
The legal tax avoiders of means have multiple residences. They still get all the benefits, just none of the costs.
It's not the tax issues. It's pressure from his sponsors.
Everything he threatened to do he can....easily.....but he made a spectacle instead of using some lame excuse like others have.
P.S. Denise Rich did this over the summer and saved tens of millions. She just comes and goes about the US on an austrian visa without missing a beat. However, she doesn't have any sponsors to appease and she used a cheap excuse instead of being (stupidly) honest like Mickelson.
I don't feel sorry for people who make millions of dollars a year playing a sport. I don't care if they pay a little more in taxes. They really make themselves look petty when they complain of taxes.
. But it's his choice if it's worth uprooting his life to prove a point, or if the thought of surviving on only $40 or $50 million /year is too unsettling. Of course, he might have to sell another patch on his little polo shirt to make up the staggering loss.
He travels about 80% of the time... so not much uprooting would be needed. And I doubt that he is just trying to "prove a point".

I'm not sure if your jealousy exceeds your ignorance or vice versa. There was no "outburst". And he contributes millions to charity. Maybe you should learn more about him before making childish statements.
