I understand.
I plugged some numbers into the Taxbrain calculator and at $8000 with the number of kids she has she'd get back $3960

Last year I got back like $5400 and I have one child. I also had like 4 w-2s; I'm sure if I would have gotten the other two w-2s that I was entitled to I would have gotten more, but those jobs didn't give me mine. I don't know how much I will get back this time, I have 3 w-2s, worked longer, and also have the 1099 when I was unemployed for a short time. I'm buying a car I know that!

This is whats wrong with America.
Yep. Same thing happened a couple of years ago with two people I know who are alcoholics. They barely worked the prior year and were thrilled when they got a "refund." REFUND? It couldn't be a tax refund, because the amount was more than their entire earnings. They are both single men, no dependents.

Your W2 only indicates withholdings, not liability. You may not pay anything close to $5,000.

Not true. If your income isn't high enough you get a "tax credit" which can't really be a tax credit when it's more than you paid in in taxes (or earned). Yes, it does happen that way.

Yeah, we'll be getting back a chunk too this year. My hubby had 3 jobs, Labor Ready, a 4 week seasonal job, and the job he's at now, and I had my job, a paper route, and survey money...so (2) 1099 forms.

I'm paying our rent ahead a few months, getting my car fixed, and looking into health insurance, also paying up my car insurance.
Not everyone spends their tax returns on big screen TVs and video game consoles.

I believe you are incorrect thinking that. My understanding of the tax law is that she could earn zero(ie not work), collect welfare and get refunded $1000 per eligible child. I don't see what is so hard to believe about that.

So true, I like to own my car, I don't like leases so I like to get a sensible a few years old car. I also will be starting a Mutual fund; maybe put like 300-400 in there, I will be getting health insurance, pay a few bills, and the rest, I would like to treat me and my daughter. My mom is taking us to Florida as my gift for graduating college, so of course we have to look good , then I have to get ready for my second semester in grad school

But yea, I know people who just blow the money as soon as it comes and they are no better off than before they had the money. Still in debt, get their car repoed, but they have nice shoes, hair is fixed for a month maybe, clothes have been upgraded, then they are back to struggling.
