Public forums like this are targets for "sock puppets" to control dialog and help form public opinion. Be aware that the person attempting to derail your thread or discredit your points with bogus information could well be paid to do it. I have seem many examples of this on public forums.

Revealed: US spy operation that manipulates social media
Military's 'sock puppet' software creates fake online identities to spread pro-American propaganda

Ntrepid

Ntrepid is an American software, hardware, and cyber security company, registered in Los Angeles[1] and based in San Diego.[2]

Operation Earnest Voice
In March 2011 The Guardian reported that Ntrepid had won a $2.76 million contract for "online persona management" (commonly known as "sockpuppetry") operations from the U.S. military.[1] The contract is for the creation of "fake online personas to influence net conversations and spread US propaganda."[1] According to the US military, the technology would not be used in the U.S, or on sites owned by U.S. corporations such as Facebook and Twitter.[3] Rather, it would be used exclusively outside the U.S. on sites owned by non-U.S. corporations, in order to counter violent extremist and enemy propaganda, US CENTCOM representatives claim.[3]

Ntrepid will supply software, named "MetalGear",[4] that will enable one operator to create and control multiple personas from one computer, "without fear of being discovered by sophisticated adversaries".[2] The software sought would allow up to 50 users to each have 10 personas.[5] Each persona would have a background, history, supporting details, and cyber presence that is consistent from a technical, cultural, and geographic standpoint.[5][3] The user would be able to use his different online personas from the same PC, and make them appear to be coming from almost anywhere in the world, without his true location being determined even by a sophisticated enemy.[5][3] The service envisioned would also communicate to the user real-time local information, so that he could appear to be socially aware as he would be if he were located in the relevant geographic location.[5]

The project is overseen by U.S. Central Command (Centcom), whose spokesman Commander Bill Speaks stated that the operation would be carried out in languages other than English, particularly Arabic, Farsi, and Urdu.[1] He stated that, "The technology supports classified blogging activities on foreign-language websites to enable Centcom to counter violent extremist and enemy propaganda outside the U.S."[6]

The project will probably be based at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida, and will be within the remit of Operation Earnest Voice.[1]

Why am I not surprised.

It's well known now that the youth are fully engaged in "social media" and are heavily influenced by it.
Just look at all the incidents, both good and bad, that were fueled by Facebook, twitter, etc. from innocent flash mobs to flash robs to government uprisings.

Social media has no face. You can say anything on the internet enough times and people will start taking that as fact.

Just remember..technology can be used for just as much "badness" as it can for goodness.

Notice the article is not from mainstream media in the USA?

If a government manipulates social media for influencing public opinion then the last thing they would do is draw attention to the activity.

I expect sock puppets to chime in on this thread in an effort to discredit and derail.

Don.... it certainly doesn't suprise me. But of course as usual the detractors will show up, as they drink the MSM kool aide that all is well, and that our government officials ALWAYS have our best intersts. No... government would NEVER spy on it's citizens now would it? Nawwwww!

How is this paranoid? The military was paying civilian military analysts, while they were going network news shows promoting the Iraq war as objective experts. They also got caught faking their own press conferences with fake news reporters. Here is yet another example http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/0107-07.htm Here is another example http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...102602157.html Here they are misleading US citizens that it was the Yemeni government that was bombing it's citizens, while in fact, it was US tomahawks. http://www.salon.com/2012/03/14/obam..._imprisonment/
