BBC News - Spain unemployment rate hit a record: youth rate at 55%

What a disaster, and to think that the crippling bureaucracy, red tape and uncompetitiveness the Spanish endure is exactly the result of the sorts of policies our Democrats espouse.

Yes there is Spain. Also Greece. Italy too. Your point? There is also Germany. The Netherlands. Denmark. Switzerland. Norway. Sweden. Do you have a point? Finland. Belgium. Unemployment is not 26% in Germany. Nor in Holland. Democratic Socialists both.

In the New World, Mexico unemployment never reached 6% and is at an all time low 4.x% Maybe having a job is better than complaining about a job.

A lot depends on how each nation arrives at it unemployment figures. They don't all use the same yardstick.

Actually, the Spanish went with a weak social safety net, few regulations on their banking, low rates of unionization and low to no minimum wage. Republican policies. Much like Greece, Italy and Portugal. Democrats policies are normally found in more northern European countries.

Unlike the other mediterraneans, the Spanish didn't rely on borrowing and ran balanced budgets, as far as I'm aware. So thats something.

Real unemployment is nothing like 26%. Most just work in the cash in hand/informal economy. True unemployment is higher in the US, where if you are unemployed you just get a student loan, study for some non-degree and become un-unemployed and classed as economically inactive.

The US is the real basket case, not Spain.

They faced debt issues, a housing crash and recession llike us, but unlike us, their choice of action was austerity which is actually what the Republicans are calling for here. Spain is dealing with the consequences of that action now. In the other hand I remember Spain before the EU, and their unemployment was always among the highest in Europe.

Yes, we all know now that austerity depresses economic growth. Take a look around Europe to see the GOP's vision for fixing the economy.
