This is the USA after all. What would happen to the citizens that are drug addicted and suddenly can no longer obtain their drugs? Either the drug rehab clinics would be filled to capacity and/or they'd kill themselves due to severe depression. I know not many think of this consequence, but I think that it warrants a valid discussion as it affects real American citizens and may put their lives in jeopardy.
Someone could open drug clinics and make money off them. There is always opportunity somewhere.
Even if that were true, what kind of government outlays would be required to provide those services for those who could not afford the clinics? Even for those who could afford the clinics, what about the time that they would have to take off from making a living, paying taxes, etc. These would be unintended consequences that would reach into American society.
You are assuming that securing the border will prevent the importation of drugs.
The cartels would find other ways to transport - airplanes, watercraft, ect...
I have a better idea - let's end the drug war and allow the legitamate market to handle distribution.
I can't believe that I agree with you Harry But I don't think that our all-knowing government would EVER allow that to happen! By making the drug cartels get craftier, that would also drive up the costs of drugs since the demand would still be there.

If you can afford the drugs you can afford the clinics... I think...
I don't know the street price for drugs.
One could also make the argument that drug users are already hurting their ability to work and pay taxes.

If the prices of drugs increase, wouldn't people be priced out? The stereotype of a drug user isn't exactly the wealthy productive citizen.

Yes - and I believe that jacking up the costs through heavy inderdiction was another failed tactic used by previous administrations. They failed to account for the addiction factor and instead of working as it was predicted(raise costs and price users out of the market), it caused the users to become more violent in their attempts to access cash to pay for their habit.
And there is the conumdrum which makes the drug war something that will never be "won". Unless treatment is a priority, the demand will always be present, and as long as drugs are illegal, the black market will supply what is wanted.
There is a scene in the movie Traffic where Michael Douglas's character asks the Mexican general in charge of eliminating drug cartels what he does to treat drug addicts. The general answers that when users OD - they die, and no longer need drugs.
Unfortunately, that seems to be the method used here as well, in real life.

There is no secure border if the cartels are getting tons of drugs over it. No matter how they do it -- airports are not secure if shipments from the cartels are flying in.
There is no secure border at all.
