I should say this isn't a new issue. I was in a hiring position years ago and have had people fill out applications who couldn't spell the word "school". But are people this dense? Don't they realize some basic skills are required?
Easy now, these fine specimens brought you their current President, King and Fuhrer.

I know it's frustrating to have a child that has special needs. I suppose my point was that teachers cannot force students to learn when they don't want to, or be a special needs tutor, when they are teachers with the responsibility of teaching 20-something, and sometimes 30 kids. My sister adopted 5 special needs kids, and believe me, she has to be on top of them for everything, every single tiny thing, figuring them out, as each of them is different. Ultimately, however, she's the mother, and therefore the one that knows them best, know how they learn things best, and she determines what they need most to thrive. Special needs kids are complex. Teachers are teachers, not mothers, not fathers, not psychologists. Again, they have a very limited amount of time within which to teach a huge number of students. If one student requires special tutoring, the teacher cannot be both, the tutor of one child, and the teacher to 30. Further, if the student has huge problems, or is belligerent, or simply isn't learning for whatever the reason might be, it sets the rest of the students (who are trying to learn) back that the teacher is responsible for teaching. I do think it's up to the parents to be involved in their child's life. If their child isn't learning, and the parents expect others to figure everything out, it's always the child that is going to be hurt. The parents know when the child isn't doing well. Grades are sent home for that purpose, teacher-parent conferences are held for that purpose.

Like I said, my brother was just lazy, and continues to be as an adult. No disorder, no disability, just laziness.

I only saw her the one time and I hope that was it. But she got past someone in order to be put on air.
I hope the person who hired her got fired, as well. I'm sure the station got tons of complaints from viewers who couldn't change stations quickly enough. I'm literally cringing just thinking about hearing the poor thing.

She didn't look poor, she looked really confident. Like someone told her she could be anything she wanted to be and here she is on the news so you better like it. I'm here, I talk like a toddler, get used to it!

I believe by the use of poor the writer was referring as to how she presented herself, not her state or position in life.

Confidence does go a long way, however, too many individuals now-a-days have nothing but. I see so many with the "I'm fabulous and worth it just because" attitude, and there is no substance or skill to back it up. Welcome to the Entitlement Generation.

This is kind of a funny topic. I mean around where I live not having a perfect grasp of the English language doesn't seem to stop all the immigrants who speak broken, sometimes not understandable English from owning and running businesses like the Sunocos, Uni-Marts, Dunken Donuts, and 7'11's.

Doesn't seem to stop the HB-1 Visa workers either. As a matter of fact the Dunken Donuts down the street from me had to hire a real live American to work the take out order window because they were having "issues" with the orders.

No, I don't think the lack of English grammar skills are the reason Americans can't find jobs.

It's crazy. It's almost like people treat writing a post on C-D as less important than a doctoral thesis.

PS - Some paragraphs warrant only one sentence.

Try to get him to take some meth.

It is a potent anti-laziness drug.

The folks I'm seeing making the mistakes and errors in grammar, syntax, vocabulary, spelling, etc., that I've mentioned are not immigrants, they didn't arrive on a boat or through a border, and they certainly aren't lacking any documentation. They're Americans, born and bred here, who attended school here (or slept through it, more than likely), and who are full-fledged citizens.

I could understand it if these were folks from another country, but there's no excuse for anyone (unless they're ill or disabled, homeless, or in a monstrous situation) who was born here, and has never been out of this country not to make an effort to speak and write THEIR ONLY LANGUAGE, at least at a primary or middle school level.

This only proves that humans can communicate quite well without written or spoken language skills, some better than pasture cows. Anyone catch the Colbert Report last night?
