Oh, and by the way OP, what is your opinion on Gulen Charters? I have had to work with them (I work independently) I will say the Turks are very nice people, but you wonder what's really going on.

Yes, that was my point.

You do note however that Chicago essentially skims the cream off and leaves the rest behind in what is not much better than a holding cell until they are adults?

Kinda like how they set up their neighborhoods and dictate policing such that you have neighborhoods with 40x the murder rate of another.

Gotta be pretty sweet to pull that off and get minimal heat over it.

Last time I checked, these were the admissions policies:

Chicago College Prep Schools* are highly selective

Chicago Charter Schools** admission is primarily by lottery favoring local students
.
Chicago Magnet Schools admissions is by random lottery

The so-called classic schools are determined by your address

* Most of the College Prep Schools do as well or better than top suburban schools, anywhere in the nation. ( Many suburbanites hate to acknowledge this.)

**The Charter schools are public schools but operate independent of the Chicago Board of Education and are subsidized by private institutions. Their teachers are not members of the Chicago Teachers Union. Fot these reasons, it's unusual to see a side by side comparison between charter and other schools.

Generally speaking students at College Prep, Charter and Magnet schools out perform most classic schools because the kids and/or their parents put a high value on their education and are involved.
There are some exceptions -mostly in affluent neighborhoods.

Not true in Chicago. It's all done by lottery with preference given to sibs and students who live closer to the school.

The Charters and to some extent the Magnet schools are less likely to have applications from kids/families who do not put a high value on education.

The College Prep School are highly selective and this weeds out those who don't give a damn.

They are public schools subsidized by private foundations. As it relates to Chicago, they are not a part of the Chicago Board of Education nor are their teachers members of the union.

Admittance is by lottery. As you say, performaceis uneven and are a reflection of the students at any given time.

All schools are good. It's the kids who make or break em.
