I think most people were influenced by the region they lived in and pretty much everyone agreed on politics and people that differed in opinion didn't really speak out much due to the chances of being the odd one out and losing friends and what not.

I say that for the most part people still don't talk about politics in everyday life, just now with the internet others are more aware of peoples differing opinions.. and it's the internet where most of the conflict is.
