I don't consider the funding of the operations of the corporate church, their media outlets or private schools giving to charity.
The LDS coffers, BYU, exclusive private schools are not "charities".
Neither are places like the Federalist Society, the Hoover Institution, the Heritage Foundation, and the Massachusetts Family Institute are not charities. They are political organizations.
Romney is expected to give 10% to his church (to be a Mormon of good standing) anyway isn't he?
Church's should be taxed like any other business, since that is what they are.
As far as Romney.....
2010:
LDS Church: $145,000 (not charity)
Belmont Hill School: $5,000 (not charity - prestigious private school)
Best Friends Foundation: $15,000 (charity)
Boys and Girls Club of Boston: $10,000 (charity)
Brigham Young University: $25,000 (not charity - LDS University
Center for Treatment of Pediatric MS: $75,000 (charity)
2009:
LDS Church: $600,000 (not charity)
The Becket Fund: $25,000 (tax-exempt organization , not a charity)
My Sister's Keeper: $5,000 (charity)
Mass General Hospital Cancer Center $1,000 (charity)

SafetyNet: $10,000 (charity)
Boston Ten Point Coalition: $15,000 (charity)

In other words, one received greater tax avoidance (breaks) then the other.
You think that the money given away is some sort of abstract? It doesn't go to helping people?
LOL
Romney gives away money that helps people and organizations and somehow you find the guts to castigate him for doing so based on your own interpretation of what qualifies as "charity?"
This, folks, is what liberalism has devolved into. It's a mental disease of the highest order. I really, really feel sorry for your types. Someone should offer up some "charity" to you to help you sort out your issues.
Look folks, MTA killed this thread by disproving the original premise made by the OP.
Besides, Romney lost anyway. We didn't care about his charitable giving back in November, and we care even less now. He's now in the trash heap of history, and will remain there despite your attempts to resurrect him.
It's over. Find a new candidate for us to argue about...not some has-been.
That money must go through the leviathan of the federal government first, huh?
Simple. The LDS church doesn't really help the needy....the poor, the hungry, the sick and the disenfranchised. Most of the money in their vast coffers goes towards buying land, shopping centers and real estate to generate even more money for the church. They use it to build bigger churches.
The Reuters analysis also accused the Mormon church of neglecting charity work with their billions. It states that the organization owns no hospitals and has only a “handful” of primary schools. The church puts most of its considerable resources into profit-making investments. For example, Reuters points out that it is the largest rancher in the U.S.
