Air travel was certainly much more pleasant (and cheaper) when they were closely regulated. Initially deregulation brought competition and price reductions, more airlines and routes. Over time though mergers and out-right collusion have made air travel both difficult and expensive.
Perhaps I don't understand the meaning of Nonprofit...
You definitely don't understand the meaning of unprofitable. The vast majority of mass transit is unprofitable in the US. Who makes up the difference so the buses, subways and trains keep running? Local, State and Federal governments do in the form of subsidies. Who subsidizes those entities via tax revenue? Answer: the taxpayers. Surely you don't believe that putting an unprofitable airline in the hands of government will magically turn it from unprofitable to profitable or at least break even? It won't and the only way to keep it running will be for tax payers to pony up some money.

Airlines make their money from Business Class, First Class, and air cargo. Economy breaks even (at best). When the economy suffers, so will the airline business. The US airline industry is hurting, but the upcoming merger of USAir and American will help. Consolidation is the smart way to go. But, to be fair, all airlines (every where) are hurting.
You're just asking for fares to go up, by encouraging more consolidation, and less competition. Be careful what you wish for. I'm traveling with my son to two Lacrosse tournaments this Summer, one in Virginia, one in Colorado and the only place I can find a decent fare is with this discount airlines.
