As a person from Soviet Russia, I can tell you that it's not unrealistic for a tyrant to take advantage of the hungry and jobless.
Suppose a popular tyrant and his party take over congress, backed with many supporters. This is spurred by a major disaster, perhaps natural or economic. This disaster causes food and water shortages. Said tyrant with his own private army comes for your land and resources.
For whatever reason the constitution as you know it is abolished in the interest of the people's need for food and employment.
Would you defend your land and risk a somewhat certain death?
Or would you retreat and reorganize and give liberty a fighting chance?

I would seek out a leadership position in the new government, then hunt down and destroy the rebels by creating a weapon system the size of a small moon and randomly destroy planets.
