The free phone program was originally a landline program. It switched to a cell phone program in 2008 because it's cheaper to give out cell phones than install land lines and maintain infrastructure in old homes. They also realized that poor people move around a lot and they had to keep setting up the land lines which costs money. Cell phones was a cheaper way to run Reagan's free phone program.

While the cell phone distribution began at the beginning of Obama's first term, the change to cell phones was actually approved under Bush.

I suggest that you consider college or some other form of experience which will teach you how to do research and critical analysis. You can't form conclusions based on what you think or hear without verifying it. Cell phones did exist in the 80s.
You're preaching to the choir here. WE know that.
It's the other set of uneducated folks that actually think this is an Obama program just for them.
The media blitz didn't help any and the government did nothing to correct it.
What do you expect ? It's now become a household word. I've heard 12 year olds say it in school.

KUchief25 and Ferd don't know that based on their posts. KUchief25 blames Obama for the expenses occurred because of the program.

LOL, this is not some plan by Obama to "appease his supporters". Please stop already with the bi-partisan BS, it's 2013. Wake Up!

It's just another example of private corporations colluding with the Government to profit from the American taxpayer.

It's actually getting pretty ridiculous, the workers are paid on commission and seem to be pretty good salespeople.
But, I guess it doesn't take much skill to "sell" a free phone and plan.

Actually, we're a third world stinkhole because corporations and a ruling elite run an oligarchy, supported by conservatives of other social classes in order to pretend they're part of the elite; because all other social classes are now wage slaves to the ruling elite; because the religious right has successfully attacked thought, logic and education across the board; and because we have a third world health care system.

With all that going for us, sending a mission to Mars, Jupiter or the planet Alderaan isn't going to do squat.

The FCC instituted some reforms when it leaked that there was no oversight and people had multiple free phones.

They still don't have a database and are doing revalidation's on a state by state basis but were able to recoup $213 million in detecting multiple plans owned by people. They've only worked through 23 states so far.

Hey..sometimes investigative journalism and public outrage do work.

On Feb. 13, NASA’s Fiscal 2013 Budget was announced and the Obama Administration carved away nearly half the Mars mission budget. Altogether, funding for NASA’s Mars and Planetary missions in the Fiscal 2013 budget would be sliced by $300 million – from $1.5 Billion this year to $1.2 Billion in 2013. NASA was forced to gut the Mars program to pay for the cost overruns of the James Webb Space Telescope.

Today is February 12th. This article talks about the budget that was released on Feb. 13, 2012. Does anyone know whether or not these cuts were enacted?

Anyway, maybe not the plan?

And, in case anyone is interested, an article from the end of last week:

With 10,000 people a day turning 65, it's likely more people will become eligible as time goes on.

Hats off to the GOP SuperPacs for making obamaphones an enduring piece of misinfomration.
