This is not good from a military standpoint. Russian Bear Bombers carrying nuclear tipped cruise missiles flew to Guam and circumnavigated it until we had to scramble F-15's to run them off. This shows the weakness of President Obama. It shows that Russia does not respect him as a strong leader. This is quit embarrassing for the United States.

Bear Bombers Over Guam | Washington Free Beacon

The Russian Tu-95 Bear-H strategic bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and were followed by U.S. jets as they circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 local time—hours before President Barack Obama’s state of the union address.

Air Force Capt. Kim Bender, a spokeswoman for the Pacific Air Force in Hawaii, confirmed the incident to the Washington Free Beacon and said Air Force F-15 jets based on Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, “scrambled and responded to the aircraft.”

The bomber incident was considered highly unusual. Russian strategic bombers are not known to have conducted such operations in the past into the south Pacific from bomber bases in the Russian Far East, which is thousands of miles away and over water.

John Bolton, former U.N. ambassador and former State Department international security undersecretary, said the Russian bomber flights appear to be part of an increasingly threatening strategic posture in response to Obama administration anti-nuclear policies.

“Every day brings new evidence that Obama’s ideological obsession with dismantling our nuclear deterrent is dangerous,” Bolton said. “Our national security is in danger of slipping off the national agenda even as the threats grow.”

Obama has more pressing issues to deal with. He had to play a round of golf with Tiger Woods after all. Cmon you can't expect him to worry about the ruskies buzzing nuclear bombers all over.

All reports point back to a website called "The Washington Free Beacon" - a right wing 501(c) nonprofit website started just one year ago. Unless there are other sources, that don't rely the Beacon's article, I call BS. http://freebeacon.com

Well if the Washington Free Beacon is BS. then why is NBC World News using them as a source?

Russian nuclear bombers intercepted near Guam - World News

The two Russian Bear bombers flew near Guam at about the same time President Barack Obama delivered his State of the Union message. Military officials refused to speculate about the timing.

The interception was first reported in the Washington Free Beacon.

Why then, if this is about Russian Bombers over Guam last week, is the picture of a Dutch F-16 intercepting a Russian Bomber over the North Sea in 2010?

This is the same website that claims Russian nuclear subs are operating undetected in the Gulf of Mexico and that Russian Bear aircraft were intercepted off the California coast last summer.

Obviously using logic, I would surmise that the source writers wanted to show a AP pic of a Russian Bear Bomber so readers could see what one looked like without any relevance to the F-18 Hornet fighter. Apparently it didn't seem to bother NBC World News since they linked to the Washington Beacon as their source. But I guess if you could contact the Beacon if want to get your answer straight from the source.

This is all speculation on your part. It's not embarrassing to the United States.

The same website that The Mail Online linked as their source? I believe you're right. Seems like their trustworthy that these big sources are linking to them.

It appears to be left to the reader to figure out how one can know exactly how long a suddenly appearing submarine has evaded detection. Seems to be a bit of a logical problem.

Be that as it may, the Soviets and now Russia has been sending ELINT Bears as close as they can to US/NATO installations pretty much since they started building them - which, notwithstanding their appearance, was in fact some time after World War II. It's their thing. US/NATO then sends up interceptors and tells them to go away. Hardly worth a mention, and John Bolton of course knows this, but - apparently correctly - assumed that his intended audience either wouldn't know or wouldn't care.

Anyway, I found this interesting gallery of intercepts - mostly notable for the variety of NATO aircraft, pretty much showing fighter development over the last 5 decades or so.
