Actually, most African Americans do not have Native American ancestry. The majority of African Americans have European ancestry however it became easier to swallow the idea of one's lighter complexion coming from Native Americans vs the truth of the rape of Black women by European men. This is the origin of the "indian blood" myth.
She didn't say "most." She said a "significant number," and she's right. Absolutely right.
And African Americans have been swallowing the truth about our racial makeup for years. We've never been in denial about it. We just don't usually find our European ancestry to be all that important. I know I dont. Not even a little bit.
Sorry but the Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek, Choctaw and Seminole) all owned African slaves. African slaves were made to walk the Trail of Tears with the Native American masters out to the Western territories. And they did not emanicpate their slaves following the Civil War.
I encourage everybody to have their DNA tested. It's not a perfect test, but it can sometimes reveal ethnic roots that you never knew about. It did for me.
Being 5% ABC doesn't mean much though when you're 70% XYZ.
Yes, it is true that the majority do not, but a significant number still do. Those with whom I am referring to are the ones who are actual members of tribes (a couple actually spent time on the reservations). But yes, I mentioned earlier that it was probably not wanting to pass on the brutal history of how they ended up mixed with Europeans.
There was not as much intermixing between African slaves and Native Americans as people think.

Again, my post stated a significant number, not the majority. The majority of Americans do not have Native American heritage. However, when including those who are mixed, the number is more significant.
While most African-Americans would likely say they have Indian blood flowing in their veins, DNA testing suggests that fewer than 10 percent of black people are of Native American ancestry. To be exact, 5 percent of African-Americans have at least 12.5 percent Native American ancestry, meaning at least one great-grand parent. In contrast, 58 percent of black Americans have at least 12.5 percent white ancestry.
I did not say that Black Indians do not exist. One of my friends from high school is Black and Native American genetically and culturally. However the number is not significant.
The only descendant of Indians walking around today is a person with at least one parent with 100% Native blood. Grandparents, uncles, in-laws, and all that other bull doesn't count. Parent ONLY.
