Legislature gave government that power in the 1860's during the civil war, and never took it back.

It's a bit like the 1913 Federal Reserve act; legislature gave banks a HUGE amount of power, there was tremendous debate at the time, but eventually everyone came to see this as normal.

True. The Fed bill was actually rejected by Congress twice, but passed the third time although they only changed the name of the bill.

Indeed, and now we have jackasses running around talking about "Free Markets" and "Deregulation" without ever mentioning the abolition of the Federal Reserve act or the Income tax.

It was long before a population boom, the need for regulation after the industrial revolution and the idiocy of having a military budget larger than the next 15 combined...plus, the whole drug war doesn't help either.

I'm fine with the income tax as it is though, it's not all that large...especially compared to the past. The problem is the moronic spending by the government and the insistence that government is necessary to control our personal lives...

Because there was a time when we were an agrarian backwater rather than a modern nation state.
