why do they care, or is this just a myth?

Aren't there enough poor in our own countries to worry about, and even if not, then why worry about someone in a far flung region that has absolutely zero connection to our own lives?

They are humans like us living on the same planet, many of us feel bad for them.

Many people want to help the third world so that they can travel. Others want to convert them and that is why they care. I also suspect there is something more exotic/interesting in saying "I helped children in Tanzania" as opposed to saying "I helped children in the nearby inner city." Call me a cynic, but there is almost always some non-altruistic reason behind it.

I don't think my parents gave a thought to the 3rd World countries, but they sure used it as a way to guilt us into cleaning our plates. "The starving children in China (or Ethiopia, etc.) wouldn't complain about that food..."

My parents did that too. I always told them to mail to food if it was that important.

The Internet is no doubt a factor with much greater access to information and media of other countries. (As Kony 2012 shows)

I don't care if private citizens and corporations want to donate to third world countries to help the poor. I do have a problem when our government does. With the number of people who where middle class that has fallen into poverty, we have enough hungry, homeless people who should be taken care of.

Our government has spent billions of dollars "investing" in Afghanistan building up villages with people that were doing just fine living in the 18th century. I'm sure if the Afghani villagers had to crap in a hole for another 100 years it wouldn't bother them. It's all they know. But they are poor, ignorant people who need help.

Where did the OP get the goofy idea that people care about 3rd world countries? Most of today's voters couldn't even name a 3rd world country. Or any country other than the USA.

It would be hilarious in a sickening liberal kind of mentality to see someone like Leno or Watters ask street people to name a 3rd world country.
