Sorry, but no. The VA is tnot the arbiter of mental soundness in the issue of firearms ownership. That is the perview of the States. YOu have heard of the States haven't you?
Still hanging on to this?
Why would the states be a more accurate arbiter of mental health of vets who use the Federal VA System as a treatment provider. Nonsense. Your trying to defend an indefensible position when you got taken by a right wing blog-o-stupidity.
You'd do well to discern between facts and what you simply wish to be true.
Ok, it also does not mean that you should have unrestricted access to weapons if you display signs of serious mental or psychological deterioration.
This is not new policy, and for rational humans, it is not all that controversial. Other than right wingers, most of us don't want to make it as easy as possible for crazy people like Jared Loughner to get their hands on guns.
What they are trying to do, is say all military that come back from a theater of war, are not going to be allowed their 2nd amendment rights. It is a blanket being thrown over the veterans of war. They go fight for us to keep our rights(if that is what you want to call it these days in the middle east) and then they lose those rights the second the land on our soil.
The REAL question isn't "Do you want to say you have PTSD or not?" The REAL question is "DO you have PTSD or not?"
It's really not a choice - though it's often a choice to either be truthful about it or not.
Some people aren't truthful because of what they consider the stigma. Some aren't truthful because they think it's a sign of weakness on their part. Some people aren't truthful because they want a larger disability check each month for the rest of their lives.
And some people won't be truthful after they get this letter - because they don't want to lose their Second Amendment rights - or be deemed as incompetent and labeled as such.
I really don't think they should be reminded of the ramifications beforehand, because whether or not they get to possess guns or be deemed competent or incompetent really has nothing to do with whether or not they WANT to have PTSD. They've either got it or they don't - and a team of medical experts needs to determine that.

Not really. When the state "deems" a person to be incompetent, it is only via a team of medical experts - the state doesn't have anything to really do with determining whether or not a person is incompetent - other than ordering the tests from experts, and accepting the diagnosis of those experts.
That's all the VA would do and could pass that info along to the states. The issue I see is that the VA is a FEDERAL entity - the states would have to determine whether or not they accept the diagnosis from the VA's medical experts. I certainly don't see why they wouldn't. Or shouldn't. They already do accept the diagnosis from medical experts designated by the state.
Veterans... VA prohibiting the ownership or purchase of firearms
In a strange way this ruling makes good sense if it's true (I can't verify on line) since the mental condition of some returning troops make them a risk to own firearms. Crazy nuts I know but still true.
What do you expect when **** now run things at the highest level in the military?
Left leaning socialist with no morals, values or respect for tradition.

read the thread!
this is a fear mongering distortion of the brady bill which passed in 1994!!! you've been completely suckered in by that distortion.
.... or do you believe those with severe mental issues should have guns?
I'm a veteran, enrolled in the VA. And, I have received no such letter.
