Understand the fundamental difference between a republic and a democracy.

Understand that political labels and political ideologies are usually two different things.

If you want biased insults you have already done the right thing -- go a public forum and invite people on one side of the spectrum to describe what the people on the other side believe and do.

But if you're looking to honestly decide what people stand for and possible find where you fit in then there are two good resources.

First, go the offical party websites. Each party publishes their platform on their website.

Second, go take a votematch quiz. These free online surveys ask you questions about where you stand on particular issues, and then place you on an overall graph of of the political sphere based on your responses.

If you want an education about politics, just stop in at the local tavern and you'll get more than you want. Politics is the ugly face of public vulgarity. Of all subjects, politics is poor-taste table talk. Confine it to the bars where it belongs.

The practice of politics is another matter. That has to do with getting elected to public office - and staying there. If you want, I can teach you the "short course".
