Trust me. I'm a commercial pilot and have taken off and landed from uncontrolled fields many times. These are not major airports; these are the ones that you hear about Air Traffic Controllers falling asleep at. I found this list
http://www.faa.gov/news/updates/medi..._Be_Closed.pdf I'm not sure how accurate it is, but if you look at it, you will see these are mostly small towns. I'm surprised many of them even have control towers. The amount of "general aviation" (non-commercial) flying has decreased in recent years due to the rising costs of fuel, insurance, fees, maintenance, etc. so many of these airports are not as busy as they used to be. Most of the airliners shown on the map you posted take off and land at the major airports, not these smaller ones. Smaller airports served by airliners may only have a few airline flights a day plus a few general aviation flights.
