Discipline.

The discipline to work long and hard.
The discipline to recognize needs from wants.
The discipline to endure the minimum to save for a better future.
The discipline to abstain until you could afford children.
The discipline to be careful with expenses.
The discipline to not act out of impulse.
The discipline to not do drugs.
The discipline to take studying seriously.

If people were more disciplined, many of the problems facing the households of America would not be here today. This includes problems with education, real estate, personal debt, health, driving, etc.

...The country would be better off, if parents taught their children discipline.

Ill add a few more:
The discipline to grow the police state and erode civil liberties
The discipline to continue propping up the military/industrial complex
The discipline to invade countries that pose us no threat

Those are merely associations with certain people that label themselves as conservatives with respect to government. They are not personal.
I was talking about personal conservatism.

I would add:
  • The discipline to make decisions based upon reason rather than emotion; and
  • The discipline to be consistent and not hypocritical.
Which is why GOP hypocrites, when exposed, typically end their political career. While on the other hand, Democrats appear to thrive on their hypocrisy.

Correction: discipline to allow individuals to keep more of their own money

I only wish conservative politicians had such discipline, but they are mostly as bad as thieving dems.

No, conservatism is supposed to be about limited government.

The reason this country shakes down to a center right country is this.

80% of the people, even on this board will agree with the following. Everyone wants government to do this, stay out of my house, stay out of my life, and spend as little money as is possible for essential services.

The devil is in the detail on what people think should go on in others homes, lives, and what quantifies as essential.

I wasn't aware of that.

Personal responsibility is very important, but it is also important to keep others in mind.

If you want to know what conservatism - or for that matter, any political philosophy - is about, perhaps you should take the question seriously and read something serious.

On conservatism, you could do much worse than to begin with Russell Kirk, The Conservative Mind. You'll find it at Amazon and any well-stocked book shop.

Too bad most Conservatives don't live up to their own ideals.
