It's called Operation Clean Halls, where police patrol buildings inside and out. There is a racial issue, but only because these neighborhoods tend to have high black and hispanic populations. Sounds to me they are giving away more freedom in the name of safety, and some residents are objecting to the intrusion, others like the reduced crime. There are civil rights lawsuits pending.

What do you think? If Sheriff Arpaio introduced this, would you think differently?

New York is past becoming a police state. Seems like the sheep like it that way.

According to the article though, the owners of the buildings have to sign a document giving police the authority to enter the building and perform arrests. The police can't walk into a private building any time they want without a warrent. I don't have a problem with that...except why is the public paying for what is essentially private security?

Has the tactics worked in NY in terms of fighting crime? Is his "overbearing" governing worth the trade off?

High crime areas are turf for gangs, so what will they do? Move into another gangs area and have territorial wars? This may spread the crime around.

Sorry it was a rhetorical question. It didn't translate on the internet too well.

The name Operation bugs me, that's a military term. They could call it a program instead, sounding a little less tactical.
