My daughter-in-law was working as a substitute teacher in Nashville Tennessee right after graduation, while she waited to secure a permanent teaching position. She confronted one student (grade 8 I think, but can't remember for certain"). He looked down at her and said "I'll MAKE a ***** shut up!"

My daughter-in-law is 5 feet tall and this was one of her first teaching experiences right out of college. She felt threatened enough by this student that she hit the panic button in the classroom (yeah.........they have panic buttons). Nobody showed up to back her up. Nobody.

She works full-time with grade one students now. Many can't speak English. Many have had NO training at all - can't write any letters of the alphabet, don't know any letters of the alphabet, don't know their colors. Some in the classroom (even at this age) have serious discipline issues and she spends more time controlling these out-of-control little monsters than she does teaching.

My prediction is that she won't last five years in the profession.

If you did that at your job..how long would you last there ?

Tow the line or get bad reviews and then your contract is not "renewed".

I'm not surprised, but I'm at a loss for words. If the parents are not doing their job, then problems will arise at school.

Why didn't anyone show up to back her up?
