If Wall Mart only sold American Made goods most of our impoverished people would have decent paying jobs in the American factories making American goods. They would be able to afford to buy what they make. The Chinese would be suffering from unemployment, not us.

Just as China has high tariffs on imported goods so should we. We need a tariff to negate the advantage of using below standard wages let alone prisoner or slave wage rates. Opening our manufacturing to Chinese competition was one of Clinton's greatest mistakes and betrayals. Allowing our domestic steel industry to collapse was simply stupid.

I recalled reading about WalMart moving towards selling more made in US products and found this article from January 2013.

WalMart buy American campaign.

Quote:
Walmart pledged earlier this week to buy more American-made goods, billing the move as a way to grow the U.S. economy.

It's not just patriotism fueling the vow. The campaign will likely help the company’s image, as the chain is facing criticism over its foreign-made goods in the wake of a Bangladeshi factory fire that killed more than 100 workers. Walmart acknowledged shortly after the fire that the factory was making clothing for the retailer. Plans for Walmart's campaign were in the works for more than a year -- or well before the fire -- David Tovar, a spokesman for the company, told The New York Times

Already about two-thirds of the products sold by Walmart's U.S. unit are American-made, grown or sourced, according to Reuters. But on Tuesday, the company announced it would aim to buy $50 billion more in U.S.-made goods over the next 10 years, in areas like appliances, sporting goods and towels.
Walmart's Buy American Campaign Could Boost Retailer's Bottom Line

What is the source here. As far as i know Wal-Mart always matched competitors on pricing and capabilities. In the 70s I'm sure there was a transition from US to Japanese made electronics. When China came on-line Wal-Mart went with all other companies and began sourcing from China.

Any company that did not follow its competitors and fight for the lowest cost would lose as Americans have shown no appetite for "donating" to American Business to keep them afloat.

Routinely Wal-mart has, in the past 10 years, pushed more "buy american" campaigns.

If I had to guess.. .this "Patriotic wal-mart" never really existed. They bought American when buying American was the best value. . .and bought foreign when that moved to best value.

It is funny that your post just comes on the heels of Wal-Marts "50 billion buy american campaign" started in January.

A little Ironic.

Not really. Wal-Mart would be out of business as K-Mart, Target, Amazon, and Zappos and the others aren't that stupid.

And your "poor" people would still be out of jobs.

You don't compete with Chinese labor heads on. You have to have a skill to be competitive in this marketplace.

Well, Walmart is a grocery store.

However, things like Pens, Paper, Vacuums...
...They all have those made in China things.

This is why one should never shop at Wal-Mart. By doing so, you are supporting China-Inc. and helping to undermine US jobs. It has been over a decade since I have set foot in a Wal-Mart and hope to never do so again.

I don't shop at Walmart either, but my parents do, sigh...

...Parents love Walmart.

C from C

A universal countervailing tariff would eliminate the entire reason for buying from China or any of the other "discount" junk countries for ALL the retailers. Try selling stuff to China that can be made in China. You'll pay a pretty steep tariff to do so.
