Freakonomics » How to Think About Guns: Full Transcript

I found this part odd: So I’m not after making this country into a police state, but I think that people are kind of whacked when they act like there’s something fundamental about, you know, how guns should be part of society. It’s kind of a historical accident that you live with. But I don’t think it was deterministic in any way.

For such a smart guy that seems like a very strange thing to say. The 2nd amendment to the constitution, right after guaranteeing free speech, and specifically stating that a well regulated militia is necessary, says the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed and he thinks it's an "accident"? It wasn't deterministic?

It just sorta happened to turn out that way for no particular reason? To be honest I would normally dismiss that just being moronic, but this guy is obviously extremely smart so it just leaves me shocked. I mean even if you don't know the history of when, why, and how the constitution was written it still seems you could get from the positioning and wording of the amendment that this was very deliberate and that they had specific reasons for it.

He compares it earlier to alcohol. Alcohol is only legal now because it's been around so long that it's just accepted. Well alcohol existed then, and there is not an amendment guaranteeing your right to get drunk. I just don't get this piece of utter ignorance in the middle of an otherwise well considered interview.

You can fit how many Massachusetts, into the land mass of Texas.
Per capita or per state?
6.6 million, compared to 26 million population

Massachusetts has less then 8% minority population. It is Whiteyville.
Texas has a 26% minority population.

The Progressive bastions, Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, account for 3/4 of all violence in the state.

You see.....there is no such thing as utopia. The best we can do is lower the risk of being a victim.

Per capita, Britain has 5x more violent crime, than the USA.
Britain, has strict self defense laws. You must call the police, they have the guns.

guns do kill people. chumps feel embiggened to commit crimes and kill which they otherwise wouldn't without a gun. a gun is an enabler, plain and simple. crime would still exist without guns, but guns raise the stakes.

TX is a majority minority state. White non Hispanic people are a minority in that state.
