Over the past decades or so, the availability and quality of data on homelessness has improved considerably, due in part to initiatives by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the US Department of Health and Human Services, the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and several nongovernmental organizations working with homeless populations. Since 2007, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development has issued an Annual Homeless Assessment Report, which reports to Congress the number of individuals and families who are homeless in the previous year, both sheltered and unsheltered,
America is the richest country in the world and yet 1 in 45 children living in the states is homeless. The problem of homelessness impacts about 1.6 million children. Most of the children who are homeless are under the age of 7.
The problem of homelessness among children is getting worse instead of better. In 2010, the increase in the number of homeless children surpassed the record set in 2006, following the displacement of thousands of families as a result of natural disasters such as hurricanes Rita and Katrina. The current state of the economy has contributed to the problem immensely. Many states have cut money and allocations that go toward ending the problem of homelessness.
Is this what people accept now? In America.
The streets of Mexico (complete with banditos selling cheap jewelry) look better now than many areas of the US. And its getting worse.
How many "homeless" were there in the '30s and '40s, and even well into the '50s?
"Hoboes" were all over the place back then. some were itinerant workers, some were just bums.
I think there has always been a small segment of society that only desires to drop out and be left alone.
The fact is, the media has made them more visible these days, and the make up of the homeless has changed to a certain degree. for some reason (no, I don't know why) there are more homeless women and children now than ever before, and the media delights in telling us all about them.
After all, it is well known that doom, gloom, death, and destruction sells better than sweetness and light!

driving through parts of South Carolina, you honestly would believe you are in Mexico, people without jobs, living in small shacks etc.
Florida, also.

The propaganda that "Americas the strongest economy in the world" hasnt been true for quite some time now.Not to mention Quality of life issues.
Why?
The short answer is the devaluing of the USD, which hurts the poor the most. This combined with millions of homes stolen (through nefarious means such as robo-signing) and the pilfering of trillions of dollars from retirement funds and 401ks, and the government complicity by taking over entities such as AIG, which rendered 100% loss to equity for investors.
Because the government encouraged people to buy houses they can't afford and when the bubble came crashing down the people "who could not afford in the first place" could not hold onto the homes. People should understand that there is always a rainy day and if they extend themselves too far to prepare they will lose it all.
And Obama's policies. He wants more people dependent on the government. Nice life huh?

The problem seems to be getting worse. I see more ordinary as opposed to rugged looking people on the street.
