"I know a girl" .....one anecdote doesn't mean much in the big picture, you know.
Myth: Poverty is a minority issue.
This doesn’t mean that minorities are not living in poverty; it means that it is not solely a minority issue. Let’s look at the statistics. In 2004, the overall poverty rate was 12.7%. 25% of Blacks, 22% of Hispanics, 8% of Asians, and 8.6% of Whites were categorized as poor. When you look at the total numbers, however, the majority of people in poverty in the U.S. are White. 47% of the people in poverty in the United States are White. In 2004, that was almost 17 million people.
Yep, this is why I found liberal accusations of conservatives to be absurd. A huge chunk of the white poor vote Republican. The idea that conservatives are racist for not supporting massive federal safety nets is ridiculous given that most of the people on the dole aren't minorities, and many of them vote Republican.
I've even see liberals who support social programs turn around and make nasty comments about the red states that leech more than they give - acting exactly like the conservatives they bash as being racist and having no compassion.

Myth: Government assistance is sufficient and encourages independence.
However, it is almost impossible to get out of poverty by relying on government assistance alone. Again, let’s look at the numbers. In 2005, the average welfare check for one parent with two children was $478 a month. Did you know that 20 years ago, it was $408? The assistance available for those in needs barely allows them to cope with their conditions, let alone help them get to a place where they no longer need assistance.
Which is the source of conservative claims that liberals aren't really helping poor people, which liberals ridicule and claim are ridiculous. The welfare programs that liberals support, and oppose reforming, are only serving to keep poor people poor.
Quote:
Myth: Social mobility is possible.
There is a prevalent idea and belief that people can get out of poverty by working hard. The numbers:
2/3 of people living in poverty work an average of 1.7 jobs
1 in 4 earns poverty level wages (less than $8.84 an hour)
27% of working families have incomes below 200% of the poverty level
And again, something that I consider an argument against liberals. Conservatives aren't the ones keeping poor people down. Liberals are. This situation isn't going to change by giving minimum wage earners another dollar or two an hour. People need to value education, stable relationships, and not having children out of wedlock. The change needs to be with the poor person, not with a government program or minimum wage. It's not about working "hard" it's about working "smart". Don't have kids that you can't support. Don't drop out of high school. Get a valuable skill, whether it is a professional skill or a tradeskill, and get a good job. The way out of poverty isn't with a government program or unskilled labor. Conservatives urge people to take responsibility for themselves, and that's because it is what people need to do. It's not because conservatives don't care about the poor. It's because we want them to make smart choices, get good jobs, and attain a good lifestyle. Nobody can do that for you, you have to do that for yourself.
Obama getting elected has made no difference to my tax bill whatsoever.
I'm sure glad he beat Romney though.
and you and your ilk keep complaining how more people should work, but then you glorify about how the lowest wage is actually decreasing in real value.
so how is that a good thing, considering that there are only so many jobs available higher up the chain?
You must not work because taxes went up for everyone in January. And let's not get started with all the extra "fees" which is code for taxes for obamacare.
Yes it IS patronizing -- taking MY money and the money of others who worked for it, and doling it out to people who didn't work for it because you think those people are too stupid or lazy to work for anything is very very patronizing.
You are the one who is assuming that all those millions of people living off government handouts are incapable of doing anything for themselves. Not I -- I believe they are capable of working, of being productive members of society, not just lazy mooches.
I want them to feel the joy one receives from a job well done, feeling productive and earning one's keep.
The government is doing a very lousy job because the majority of people living off government handouts actually are capable of doing something more with themselves.
Again, there will always be poor people. So the ones you are helping today are not necessarily the same people you will be helping tomorrow or next month or next year.
Again, once you pay your taxes, IT IS NOT YOUR MONEY ANYMORE. I know it's hard to break that attachment to what was once money i your pocket, but that's how it works; you pay taxes, you pay for things you want to purchase, etc., and the money no longer belongs to YOU.
Where did you get this idea that I or the government think that poor people are too lazy or stupid to work for a living? I've never said that. You're the one who opened the door to that fantasy. You jumped from the fact that there is public assistance available to people who can demonstrate that they meet the requirements to be considered far below the poverty line, to the conclusion that just because the public assistance programs exist and continue that MUST mean that somebody thinks that poor people are too lazy and stupid to work! What I think it means is that there are fortunately enough people in this country who do not want to throw poor people out in teh streets to sink or swim, that we continue to elect officials who continue to keep those programs in place; we do not want to see people starving and homeless. We want to help them move on. WHERE do you get the idea that the majority of people on public assistance are the SAME PEOPLE for years and years and years? Do you have any numbers to back up that belief?

It IS my money. Or else you are proposing a form of slavery. Slavery is when you do not benefit from your own labor, your own physical and mental effort but when someone else reaps the financial rewards of your labor.
Why should I have to work and have my wages confiscated so that others who don't work may lay around and do nothing? I think we can all agree that is exactly what slavery is. Having others do your work for you and you don't pay them. A slave does not own his own labor, and obviously you are saying that those of us who work also do not.
Actually if Kenneth was serious about getting an education so he could get a better job than I would not care if he went on welfare for a short time to support himself while he went to school as long as he took college serious and made good grades and graduated. In fact I would encourage it.
The problem is he sounds more about making excuses and believing what Obama wants him to believe, that he is a victim and can not do it. He has got to change his thinking and take action. That is the bottom line.
I would not mind welfare so much if people would use it as they move up in life. So what is stopping you Kenneth. Get out of that job and do something for your future. Go to school and do what you have to do to be able to go.
And Malimute is right. We are being turned into slaves.
As I said, you are a fool. If you think continuing to do more of the same or if you think Obama gives one damn about you, then you are his fool. You are the only one who can change your situation but hey, keep thinking your way and in 2, 3, 5, 10 years you will be no further ahead.
Who are you talking to and who are you calling a fool?
Again, it seems that you are trying very hard to insult someone. Why don't you have the courage to be clear about it?

It is NOT YOUR MONEY after you have given it to someone else. YOU don't get a personal say in how tax money is spent other than in the voting booth. The election is over at the moment.
Don't know whether or not you are retired or still working, but when you were working, did someone pay your salary to a person other than yourself? Did the company you worked for force you to come to work every day and yet refused to pay you? THAT might be slavery if that's the way it worked. PAYING TAXES is not related to slavery in any way.
I'm saying that you own most of your labor because you do get paid for that work, unless you just work on a volunteer basis and agree not to be paid.
Your taxes are actually payment for the great good fortune of living in the country and reaping all the benefits that entails.....AND some of that tax money goes to help the poor in this very wealthy country.

LOL Your attempts at personal insults seem pretty pathetic and they are not pushing the buttons you're trying so hard to push.
Btw, give us some proof that welfare benefits are NOT being used by people as THEY MOVE UP.

That's funny because here in California I have been working all year just to pay my taxes, I won't actually earn a cent until April 20th thanks to the tax and spend liberals in the state and federal government.
BTW, you still havnt responded to the "culture of poverty" articles I posted for you to read.
