This was a post within a thread and I think it deserves its own thread for discussion.
Yeah, right.
Where, and by what right, do "the poor" have complete access to food and shelter, cell telephones, televisions, indoor heat and plumbing, as well as plenty of clothing. Further, due to "being poor", they have not only free primary education, but scholarships for secondary education.

Oh poor poor me, other Americans work to house and feed me at no cost to me and I still complain. oh wo is me.
compared to other developed countries, the US certainly has unusually low wages for unskilled workers. i wouldn't even want to live on US$10/hour in a cheap country like cambodia, hard to believe so many do it in an expensive country like the US. social mobility seems to be getting more difficult in the US as well.
i don't know, based on personal experience the US isn't all bad. i have very poor money management skills and go broke and homeless all the time, and have never had much difficulty getting myself back on my feet in the US.
I haven't been to other countries to know the difference, but like another poster said, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
I can imagine that there are other countries where being poor wouldn't be as bad as in the US, and I'm sure that there are other countries where being poor would suck worse than here...
Of first world countries, the poorest in America have it the worst off. This is hardly an argument.
Have you people ever lived, not just visited, out of the United States?

I could go on. The poor here live better than many middle class do in other countries, including European countries.
Now, if you want to say that when compared to the middle class, the working lower-income have it worse here than other countries, I'm willing to agree that might be a different story.
It can be one of the worst places, depending on where you live. If you're in a neighborhood with a murder rate of something like 130 per 100,000 and third-world rates of tuberculosis/AIDS/etc., and you can't even walk to the store at night for fear of being hit by a stray round, then you've got it pretty bad, and you'll probably only make it to your early/mid-60's anyway.
