They don't care the taxpayers will bail it out. Try to save money??? Unheard of in DC.

"The latest ruling has left many incensed. Polling shows that the majority of Americans support the United States Postal Service decreasing its delivery service. David Partenheimer, a spokesman for USPS, has said that five-day delivery is essential for keeping the Postal Service from becoming a burden on taxpayers. If Congress does not allow the post office to adapt to its customers' changing needs, Partenheimer says, USPS will be forced to ask for a taxpayer bailout to the tune of $47 billion by 2017."

Yep - no one forces Fed Ex or UPS to deliver anything.

Liberals = socialists.

Then I'll be forced to let my dog loose on the mailman

Seriously, all good things must come to an end. We don't need a US post office anymore.
They should go private if they can wing it.
I mean if we can loose a great delivery company like DHL....
but they need us to pay their golden pensions so it lingers on.

But getting rid of the USPS, as you cons want to do, would require a Constitutional amendment. It's one of the few government programs that is actually enumerated in the Constitution.

Not really.

It gave Congress the power to designate mail routes and construct or designate post offices.
Technically that could be one, or even none, based on need.

Congress doesn't have to exercise a power if it's not needed.
They have the power to declare war too,
but they haven't used that power either since World War II.

Not quite right.

I fully support the USPS, and I don't want it cut back - at all. What I'd like to see is Congress remove the mandate that requires the service to fund its pension system for up to 75 years in advance. That's why they're in such a deep hole.

But as for your comment on having to amend the Constitution, you're wrong. Nothing in the Constitution requires the federal government to operate a postal service. It simply allows them to.
The Congress shall have Power To ... establish Post Offices and Post Roads
Nothing there demands that they do it - they simply have the power to. Big difference.

But like I said, I support the USPS fully, and I don't even mind so much that it loses money. It's one of the few things that the federal government does that they're actually permitted by the Constitution to do, and as such, I don't mind my tax dollars supporting it.

Look, going to a 5 day delivery is NOT the getting rid of USPS.

Me, I'd be fine with Mon-Tues and Thur-Fri only.
Most snail mail for me is junk.

There's very little I cannot do online.

The tragic part is it is the Republicans in Congress who caused the USPS's financial problems to begin with when they demanded the USPS pre-fund the next have century of pensions all in just 10 years. There is not a single company in the WORLD which has been required to do that but Republicans have done just that to the USPS. This is why they're now having financial problems because they put a half century's worth of obligations all up front when a regular pension system (just like most private companies use) would have worked fine.

It's just outright sabotage by the Republicans and more proof they can't be trusted with anything in government.

The Post office hasn't gotten money from tax payers to "run" the post office for years.
What Congress wants is exactly what you object to, backing their Pension system

Money matters when it belongs to someone else. If the postal service can't pay
their pensions, who do you think is expected to pay the pensions - taxpayers.
