what is 'poison' to an insect is not necessarily 'poison' to humans. the proteins used for insect control in GMO plants are so specific that they're even harmless to a great many types of insects, much less humans and other mammals.
No but they sure are destroying a perfectly good natural pesticide much like we have used and abused antibiotics. By over use we now have lots of BT resistance. This is why you don't kill everything off in a mono-culture. And no its not poisoning us now, but may certainly starve us in the future. Gyphosate resistant crops just means more gyphosate dumped into the environment. When that gets to toxic levels, and doesn't work anymore they will need to use something else. Guess what? Just like with antibiotics we will turn to the ones more poisonous and with more side effects.
What we should be doing is crop rotation, mixed culture, pest suppression, not eradication, natural biological control etc. Monsanto is just the usual quick fix, magic bullet bull crap all over again. Drink sewer water and pop a pill. Not going to last, sorry. Cultural practices first and chemicals last.
Not when the West got hold of it. They sort of forgot the lye processing, fermenting or use of lime water, wood ash to free up the niacin. killed lots of people horribly. Called nixtamalization.

I know that it is nearly impossible to avoid in soy and corn products. Someone once said the UPC codes identify products as GMO but I'm not sure how true that is.

Almost all soy is GMO.
Corn is wind pollinated and way too many farmers are growing "ethanol" year after year because of profits.
When I lived near Austin I could not grow any corn because the corn field behind me was GMO corn.
I buy corn in season off the back of a truck from other farmers who know what is growing around them.

2,4-D is replacing roundup. This corn is being developed by Dow Chemical.
2,4-D is so potent that you need a state pesticide license to purchase.

The Enlist crops are genetically altered to tolerate treatments of the Enlist herbicide mixture. The hope is that Enlist will wipe out an explosion of crop-choking weeds that have become resistant to glyphosate alone.
Opponents have bombarded Dow and U.S. regulators with an array of concerns about Enlist, which is intended to replace Monsanto Co.'s successful Roundup Ready system. Genetically altered Roundup Ready corn and soybeans now dominate the U.S. corn and soybean market.

I did not even know but already guessed. Its nothing new. 2,4-D is nasty crap. They will poison us all.
