I live in South Florida, which is the tri-county area of: Miami, Broward & Palm Beach counties. On the surface, you'd think it's a liberal place b/c of all the different levels of diversity. But, scratch the surface and you'll quickly find someone who's just a tiny bit conservative.

I'm a registered Conservatine living just outside of NYC. It SUCKS! I hate all the liberalism here and that's why I'm moving soon. I really don't know why I've stayed here as long as I have. I have NO representation in gov. at all. Can't wait to move to the REAL America and get away from socialism central.

A liberal would have an awful time trying to live with the backward, conservative attitudes in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is the place that went big time again for President Bush in 2004, even though Tulsa went through an awful recession during the first term of Bush.

And the awful, disgusting Christian right hypocrisy in Tulsa is also
difficult for a liberal to deal with. For instance, in 2006 an anti-gay Tulsa Baptist preacher went on a hypocrisy binge. He journeyed down to Oklahoma City to the Habana Inn, one of the largest gay resorts in the country, and got charged by an undercover officer for offering to engage in an act of lewdness in the resort's parking lot. The police had been trying to crack down on prostitutes. He was later acquitted of the charge.

And in recent days the lawsuits against Oral Roberts University seems to be another sign of Christian right wing hypocrisy going on in Tulsa.

I'm about as liberal as one can get before being classed as a socialist, and I live in an affluent and vry conservative area of North Texas.

Once my neighbor told me that the people on my street were curious to know whether I was left or right, and I responded left. We compared ideas on gay marriage, abortion, taxes, the usual, and it was really obvious that she had become completely uncomfortable talking to me. After that conversation, the twice-a-week babysitting job I held with her was cancelled, and I was never called again about babysitting for other families in the street (prior to that, I had always been the go to gal for babysitting). Maybe it wasn't that conversation that ended my baby-sitting career for the street and it was something else I did, but it seems a little too coincidental...

At school too, I was called out by a teacher for reading a Michael Moore book. She told me that my views were wrong and abominable, and that she wished people like me had been alive during the time of Joseph McCarthy to give them a real scare.

Not all of my encounters with conservatives have been that brutal (in fact a very small percentage of them have), and most of the conservatives around here are really friendly and will jokingly call me a hippy or something and that's the end of it. Liberals around here are hard to come by, but they're certainly around. So, no, being a liberal in a conservative area isn't that difficult to deal with. When someone's rude about my views, it does hurt my feelings, but not enough to make living here completely unbearable.

I think it all depends upon how strongly attached you are to your political beliefs. Too many, these days, seem to make their ideology central to their lives.

Once it gets to where you can't mention lib/conser without adding a pejorative or two, you're best off limiting your contacts to like minded people.

It will help keep the misery index for yourself and others lower.

Real America? pfffffffff

Hilarious.

Land of the free and the home of the "your opinion doesn't count if you're not a lockstep Republican even though at least half of the country could be considered liberal on a number of issues".

Wait. Is that how it goes?

I grew up in a very conservative town. I've always had a lot of ideas that are considered liberal by many. It was tough.

Now I live in a pretty liberal place. I have some ideas that are more conservative than many. All in all, I prefer things here, when it comes to ideas.

Yes exactly and those are NOT ideals or landmarks of liberalism! If anything the liberal mindset is freedom of speech for anyone that thinks like a liberal anything else must be silenced. Hence the hatred of conservative media.
