A man shot and wounded by an officer inside the Vernon Hills police station this morning had a note in his pocket saying he was dying of cancer and indicating he wanted police to kill him.

Movie stars have died from accidental overdoses of drugs, as well as people who are depressed. I wonder if he'd ever considered that option?
What to do with terminally ill, when they no longer have the desire to suffer?

I'm all for doctor assisted suicide.
Yup. Lou Gherig's disease and others take away a sufferer's suicide option; even if they want to end their lives, they have no physical means left of doing so except starvation, and modern medicine won't permit that, except for terminal brain damage when the brain is dead but the heart and lungs still function.
Personally, I prefer not to die by slow degrees with only my mind intact. I vastly admire those who are able to accept that kind of death with no complaint. I would sooner get a sedative overdose than go through that, even if I had a few possible months left.
