Very true, many minorities don't learn to swim, swimming lessons being not high on the list of priorities probably because of the money involved. I believe this is a good program. Not sure why some people seem to have issues with it.
Anything black most cd posters have a problem with, they just got a loud voice to deflate the notion of hatred, that's really it.
It's april 1...pools dont usually open untill school lets out in may.
8 weeks, 3 times a week...24 lessons. If they dont show ability, they are not forced to make them lifegaurds.
A lot of it at that level is just showing kids HOW to kick effectively, rotary breath, dive, and do different strokes. Then it's down to lots of practice on the students part, with an instructor occasionally correcting bad technique. If the kids can't pass the swimming pre-test that requires those skills, they don't get into the life guard training and certification program. Some of them probably just need a little instruction to pass, and others may have to practice extensively to get in the following year. I've known kids who didn't do swim team but wanted to get their life guard certification, and they took some private lessons to bring them up to speed on technique, and then they practiced to build endurance. I just think it's great that they're teaching them the skills.

For teaching local kids to become expert swimmers so they can pass the required swimming pre-test to even GET IN to the life guard certification program? Are you on drugs? That's the only explanation I can come up with for that garbled line of thought...

I'm amazed at the obvious number of adult non-swimmers there must be on this board, because anyone who's ever taken a swimming lesson in their life knows that you have to have expert level swimming skills to even get into the life guard certification training...
What the H are you talking about? Are you saying it's reverse racism, or are you saying it's a good thing? I'm confused.
It's not really racism, it's how most businesses act the your their employees to mirror their customer base. Rich white area = small amount of blacks working there.

To avoid language issues, why dont they emphasize learning english instead of looking for weak swimmers to train to be lifeguards when there are plenty who are already qualified but happen to be white?
If you want minorities to be better swimmers, the solution is to suggest they take swimming lessons, not making them lifeguards and then teaching them how to swim.
