Wilson and Dan Lungren, in order to get re-elected, engaged in ethnic demagoguery and scapegoating and effectively turned the GOP against Latinos. Never mind that 187 by not targeting the employers of illegal immigrants would not have done anything to reduce the numbers of illegals, nor would 187 have passed constitutional muster under virtually any interpretation of constitutional scholarship. There was no precedent of states conducting their own immigration policy in the US, ever. Wilson and Lungren knew this, but they didn't care - they only wanted to get themselves re-elected and once that happened they didn't care. They got themselves re-elected, but in the process killed their party.

The feds don't enforce our immigration laws like they should so why shouldn't states take matters into their own hands to protect their citizens and their tax coffers from illegal immigrants in their states? Why did 187 or 1070 in Arizona alienate Latino citizens? Do they think their ethnic group shoud be above our immigration laws? Kind of arrogant and and ethnocentric, isn't it?

Both the employers and the illegals are equally guilty. No one forces them to come here. They know what they are doing is wrong.
