Oh this article is hilarious. Chicago and Illinois: America’s armpit | The Barbershop: Dennis Byrne, Proprietor

Perhaps the U.S. should pull out of Chicago ?
Body count: In the last six months 292 killed (murdered) in Chicago .
221 killed in Iraq AND Chicago has one of the strictest gun laws in the entire US.
PRESIDENT: Barack Hussein Obama
Senator: Dick Durbin
House Representative: Jesse Jackson Jr.
Governor: Pat Quinn
House leader: Mike Madigan
Atty. Gen.: Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike)
Mayor: Rahm Emanuel
The leadership in Illinois - all Democrats.
Thank you for the combat zone in Chicago .
Of course, they're all blaming each other.
Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!
Chicago school system rated one of the worst in the country.
Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!
State pension fund $78 Billion in debt, worst in country.
Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!
Cook County ( Chicago ) sales tax 10.25% highest in country.
Can't blame Republicans; there aren't any!
This is the political culture that Obama comes from in Illinois .
And he is going to 'fix' Washington politics for us???
George Ryan is no longer Governor, he is in the big house. Of course he was replaced by Rob Blajegovitch who is...that's right, also in the big house. And Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned a couple of weeks ago. That is because he is fighting being sent to...that's right, the big house.
The Land of Lincoln , where our governors make our license plates.
But you know what? As long as they keep providing entitlements to the population of Chicago , nothing is going to change, except the state will go broke before the country does.
"Socialism is the phantastic younger brother of despotism, which it wants to inherit. Socialism wants to have the fullness of state force which before only existed in despotism. ... However, it goes further than anything in the past because it aims at the formal destruction of the individual who can be used to improve communities by an expedient organ of government."
-- Friedrich Nietzsche - (1844-1900)

Note: Chicago had over 500 homicides in 2012. 508 to be exact. Also the unfunded Pension liabilities are over 100 Billion now. Plus Illinois has the worst credit rating in the country.
Such a sorry excuse of a city.

What's nice to visit isn't necessarily nice to live in.
Plus you were likely in the Loop area.
That's not all of the city and there are vast sections of Chicago that are abandoned like Detroit and filled with gangs. Tour the south and west sides to get an idea.
What do the top 10 poorest cities in America have in common? they haven't elected a Republican mayor for at least 30 years. Chicago hasn't had a Republican mayor for over 80 years Detroit I believe the last time they had a Republican Mayor is the 1960s.

Actually have you ever been to Chicago, the majority of the city is a beautiful city with amazing neighborhoods off many of the stops along the El. What you are talking about only effects a small portion of the city, which people who know anything about Chicago know that.

I have visited there a number of times over the years and would definitely live in that city.

Thank you, Urban. I've lived in Chicago most of my life, and you are spot on. There are definitely troubled areas, but the same is true in all major urban areas. Overall, it's a wonderful city to live in.

Yes I have been to Chicago countless times. Also a small portion of Chicago?
Ya Shootings on the north side/in the loop/mob action on Michigan avenue.
That's a *small* section of the city alright
The Chicago boosters here are hilarious. Live in Denial about it.

It is actually a city that is on a very short list of cities I would be willing to raise a child in. Personally I am enjoying my time here in NYC, but I don't want to raise a child here, I want to do it in an urban city where I can realistically still buy a house, have a car, yet still have a walkable neighborhood and a rail line like the El within walking distance.

And of course, who wouldn't want to live in a city that is home to the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field.

So what you are saying is the big cities scare you. Maybe you should stick to the suburbs and your friendly neighborhood Applebee's.
