Men make more money than women. I always thought it was the opposite. Discuss possible reasons. Most HR managers are women who hire women so how come men are paid more?

While no 100% conclusive answer has been determine yet, there is a lot of evidence showing that men voluntarily ask for raises much more than women. Obviously it is a more complex issue than just that, but at least one factor is an unwillingness or hesitancy of women in workplaces to approach a boss and renegotiate a salary when they are not up for a 'formal' review.

Also many high paying jobs are dominated by men (trade work, like construction) that skews the results upwards for men. Plus women usually have a gap in employment because of child rearing which hinders advancment, by the women being out of the work place, especially if they stop working until the child goes to school like many women do.

The biggest, in act, overwhelming reason men earn more during their lifetimes (and the studies that talk ab out 70 cents for ever dollar or some such figure, always cite lifetime earnings, NOT hourly or yearly pay.

The reason, many women work interrupted and/or foreshortened careers to raise kids.

You must be very young to think that.

Even women who don't take time off to have children (meaning childless women) also tend to earn less than men.

Women are impressed by men's career. Men want to impress women.

So who has more of the motivation?

Yeah, real mystery...
