However if single payer health care had been passed into law in the mid twentieth century it would be sacrosanct across the political spectrum.

Since she was PM for eleven years why did she not dump the NHS which was destroying the UK with it's socialistic ideals or was she afraid of being dumped by the UK so called Conservatives ?

Probably because it was impossible to get rid of.

Also, the NHS isn't necessarily a socialist program. All major capitalist countries except the US have some form of universal health care.

Nope, unlike the USA the PM with a majority in parliament can do what he or she likes as long as the party in power backs him or her.
Which is why Thatcher was a hypocrite to go on about socialism without attempting to dump the NHS.
Of course in real life the UK Conservatives would have dumped her as leader like they did over the poll tax.

Yes it is interesting the way the USA has Medicare for the old but damn all is done for children.
Makes one wonder where your politicians values lie.
Or is it because the old have votes ?

Destroying the UK? That's odd, since they paid homage to the NHS during the Olympics.
The USA wouldn't host the Olympics and praise illegal aliens or outsourcing or illiteracy, would it? Would make for some interesting dance numbers.

Which was a pity because voters in Britain would have dumped her like a shot.
So how many of you believe she was a conservative by US standards ?
She was a conservative by US standards. Saying that she didn't dump NHS is like saying Reagan didn't dump Social Security. Politically it was not remotely feasible. NHS is the third rail of UK politics.

Yes, the majority party can do whatever it wants. But she knew dumping the NHS would mean a certain election loss. You can only go so far on principle.

Indeed. We don't have it so people fear it. If it were something people had been raised with, like SS and Medicare, it would be untouchable. You don't see many... scratch that... ANY countries with single payer that have large movements to get rid of it.

Any hint of dismantling our healthcare system would result in riots that would make the storming of the Bastille look like a yoga class.
