A March 30 call came from Jason Probst, news editor of the Hutchinson News, a paper long known for its integrity. Probst published an obituary for our state: “The Great State of Kansas passed away on March 31, 2013, after a long and difficult battle with extremism that became markedly more aggressive in 2010. The struggle left the state so weakened it could no longer fight against the relentless attacks by the fatal disease.”
Probst looked at what we have lost. “The state is preceded in death by family farms, a good public parks and wild life system, open government, neighborliness and belief in helping each other out, freely elected public officials, and political moderation.”
“Kansas is survived by widespread poverty, low paid jobs, high property taxes, pollution, poorly educated children, outmigration and rural depopulation, foreign land and farm ownership, lobbyist-funded legislators, chronically maltreatment of the disabled, maniacal hatred of government, and children who dream of living anywhere else.”
I don’t know Probst’s politics, but highly respected Republicans have sounded similar alarms.

Wow, you just described New York State right there in the bolded..... and most states these days
Newsflash...... Kansas is floundering like many states because of poorly managed finances, lower educational standards and the outsourcing of and failure to create viable jobs to replaces them..... not because of some extremist religious boogyman
Kansas is well known for constantly giving tax breaks to Mo companies to move to Ks.
True.
MO has spent a lot of their state funds building a tourism based economy with lots and lots of nice new wide roads leading from KC and St. Louis etc. to Branson and the Lakes. Frankly, one could argue that MO has thrown KCMO under the bus with their economic decisions and I've read articles stating as much.
KCMO where most of the companies are being poached from isn't helping matters as they impose a 1% wage tax, their public schools are amongst the worst in the nation and their mass transit is dismal to non-existant.
It's not a hard call considering that the KS burbs have some of the best public schools in the country, much lower crime and unlike most of the rest of KS are relatively politically moderate.

It would have been a more effective article if they'd just focused on Brownback instead of trying to somehow link family farms, rural depopulation and economic woes....all countrywide phenomenons decades in the making to a guy that's been in office 2 years.
The crying about the death of free elections is particularily hand-wringing.
Sheesh, there is enough to complain about in terms of legislation etc. without having to get into garbage like this. Brownback is wayyyyyy too far right on social issues to stand a chance in any national election.
I have to particularily laugh at "poorly educated children" given that KS has a pretty solid public school system.

I am quite sure that Jason Probst, news editor of the Hutchinson News, would like to hear your opinion.
Chiefs Stadium
Royals Stadium

Nelson ART gallery
and most of the cultural aspects of the metro area.
Don't forget the zoo!
Also most of the concert etc. venues are all in KCMO as well as the airport.
What's nice is that I can reach all of them in under 40minutes and my kids school doesn't have a metal detector and armed officer standing at the entrance.

In the very near future there will be quite a few mentally unstable people acting out in Ks.
