Similar to the rape case in Steubenville Ohio, three teenage California boys are facing rape charges after their alleged victim killed herself last year. The boys are accused of sharing photos of the atack and posting them online.

Similarly, in Canada, a 15-year-old girl in Nova Scotia girl took her own life a few days ago, after being gang-raped by four boys and bullied for more than year after the assault. Similarly the boys distributed photos of the attack. The Canadian authorities did not press charges, and are "reconsidering" whether to do so now.

What is going on ? What is wrong with today's teenage boys and why do the girls get bullied after these attacks? Why does our legal system treat these incidents so lightly?

I'm waiting for the regulars to pop in and say it was her personal problem, she was weak and that it was probably legitimate rape.

Well that is apparently what the Canadian authorities thought, that it was consensual sex for this girl to be gang-raped.

Distributing those photos is child pornography, and that's what the boys did. So they should be prosecuted on that alone.
Something needs to be done to stop kids from thinking it's OK to post humiliating photos of girls being attacked by boys.

And notice, the boys' reputations aren't destroyed. They're hot shots and big men, and the girls are labelled you-know-whats and bullied relentlessly. It's bad enough to be sexually assaulted and then to be turned on by your classmates because of it, is just unbelievably cruel!

There is something seriously wrong with how young people are viewing women and girls. We seem to have gone backward.

And you can bet there are other cases that never even come to light.

Kids learn so much garbage in schools. I wonder if they are ever educated about sexual assault and rape, and what to do as a by-stander, like not stand by and do nothing, and not distribute photos, and not bully the victim. Let alone being educated about sexual stereotyping.

Indeed. This whole "bad boy" thing as the image of the ultimate man has gone way off the reservation. It's scary how this image is glorified, anx even scarier how many women find it attractive. They get duped into thinking they found the "bad boy with a heart of gold" and wind up victims of a vile predator.

At the high school level, such as the subject of this thread, these varmints run in packs. Affirming and vindicating the attitude that they can do no wrong. They pat each other on the back, and assure each other that girls can't resist them, and will even take brutal abuse, just to have their attentions. I saw the term "legitimate rape" used earlier. Try as I might, I cannot define such a term. Aside from its obvious contradiction in terms, I have a real sore spot with rapists and abusers.

For the authorities to turn away from this is disgusting. Do thesekids have some kind of influence? Rich families, who are "pillars of the community" , perhaps? And the girl, who is now dead, she was just a nothing? Viewed as chattel because she came from more humble origins, maybe? Grrrrr! We hear about tbis kind of stucf all the time. Justice is blind, they say, but the law, apparently, makes distinctions.

I was bullied mercilessly after my rape in 2004 - and that was in the days before Facebook, Snapchat, texting pictures, etc. I can only imagine how bad it would be now. Unfortunately, in almost a decade, I anecdotally haven't seen better handling of rape cases by the police. My own was completely dismissed because I have previously dated my attacker.. and he went on to rape again.

I was once a teenage boy and if I or any of my friends had been around we'd have beat those guys senseless.

I have a couple teenage boys and they'd do the same.

Go easy on the generalizations please.

P.S. A number of the on-line bullying attacks like in the Ohio case were committed by GIRLS. Not sure about the California or Canada cases....but you might be saddened to see that.
