San Francisco park workers and volunteers spent much of Sunday picking up and hauling away 10,000 pounds of garbage strewn all over the eastern part of Golden Gate Park known as Hippie Hill, the remnants of Saturday's annual yet unofficial pot-smoking bacchanalia.
But this year's annual celebration - which falls each year on April 20 and is known as "420" - drew a larger-than-average crowd of between 10,000 and 15,000 revelers on the warm weekend day. They proceeded to smoke, drink, eat and rack up more than $10,000 in costs for city crews to clean up the mess, ironically just before Earth Day.
Maybe this is standard fare for the people in that area, leaving their filth behind in the liberal mecca of San Fran. So much for showing respect to the coming celebration of Earth Day
San Francisco was asking for this to happen. They know what happens on April 20. There were a couple of trash cans that were overflowing with debris. All they need to do is drop off some extra cans or a debris box and people will be willing to throw out all that trash.
They can afford extra police patrols but can't notice that there is going to be a huge crowd and a need to dispose of a lot of trash. I know that it's a bunch of stupid hippies, but when each trash can is overflowing with debris by noon, what are you supposed to do?
This is a disaster waiting to happen each time 4/20 falls on a weekend with great weather. The park management gets paid enough to deal with this, but the bad P/R helps to show 'the world' how bad hippy hill is. It's all just dirty criminals, right?
Next year 4/20 falls on a Sunday. The park crew has 364 days to figure out how to get some extra trash cans on this field. Will it actually happen or will we be reading about the same thing next year?

I'm sure that the rogue recycling crews (read: immigrant recyclers) had a field day picking up cans and bottles.
Edit-- I am not believing the statistics. 10,000 people left at least a pound of garbage, each? How much do you think a paper pizza plate weighs?
I can't believe a section of Golden Gate Park known as "Hippie Hill" that's usually filled with people playing bongo drums and homeless people would ever be host to such an event...

Yeah, I wish that was an excuse, but it's not. Even my six year old knows to put the trash back in whatever bag the stuff came in and take it with you.

Yeah, pretty disappointed myself.
