One of my mother's dear friends died of (what probably would have been treatable/early-stage) breast cancer, because she adhered to these religious beliefs... and we're just one family, in "liberal California" no less, so I'm sure it's not THAT uncommon.
But at least in her case, it was an adult making that decision for herself - and as a supporter of assisted/legal suicide, I cannot fault her for doing what she felt was right. These poor children, on the other hand, didn't really get a say in the matter. So sad.
And Steve Jobs first used some sort of "alternative" care for his cancer, which probably shortened his life. Again, an adult making the decision. However, New-Age-type parents make the decision every day not to immunize their kids b/c "immunizations aren't good for the immune system". Some of these kids get sick with vaccine-preventable diseases and some may die. It's not just adherents of wacko Christian groups.
Medical neglect. This is a tricky situation to judge.
If a child has cancer and parents want to withdraw their child from chemotherapy treatments are they terrible parents? They are refusing medical treatment for their child. Same situation...
I have seen parents of children with severe disabilities also do the same thing. They want no medical intervention at all for their child.
The difference here is these people are Christian, and declined medical treatment based on faith.
Cenk is right. putting them in prison will be a big message to other nuts out there. and it will stop them from having more kids.
Only sterilization stops idiots from having more kids, but thanks to Hitler we now think letting children be murdered is much preferable to preventing their conception in the first place.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here and assume that you don't really mean "LDS" as in "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." The LDS don't rape and marry children any more than the Catholics, Baptists, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians or Episcopalians do. If you're referring to one of the miscellaneous "Mormon fundamentalist groups," that's another matter entirely -- but then they don't refer to themselves as LDS and neither should anybody else.
I highly doubt the First Amendment negates contributing to the death of a minor, especially if that minor isn't being given THEIR right to choose treatment or death. Do you also think the Boston bombers were merely exercising their freedom of religion (if it was religiously motivated), and should thus be let off the hook?
I dont ever see anyone ever complain about the amish when they refuse medical aid for their children. I wonder why. same thing here. the state and fed governments can go suck an egg.

This is not the same scenario as a child dying from cancer with treatment withdrawn when it is no longer effective. Usually done after numerous treatments have tried and failed.
This is a child that had a COLD that turned into pneumonia due to lack of treatment.

Actually the Amish do seek medical care for their children. Especially if the child becomes very ill.
Jehovah Witnesses are a group that will refuse a life saving blood transfusion for their child. The court intervenes for the child in these cases.
