Unfortunately, that's how the free market works. Banks found that by hiring bilingual tellers they had a much wider customer base than the ones who only spoke english. The only way around it I guess would be passing some sort of legislation which would ban businesses from speaking spanish to customers, or fines/jail times for anyone caught speaking spanish. What are some other ways that businesses cater to customers that we could kibosh?
It is not the Spanish language, per se, that people on this thread have a problem with, it is those that speak the language...that is the rub.

I live in Chicago, and before people started about speaking Spanish (as a second language) ... the focus, over years, had been on Polish, German, Swedish ... etc. Our local election ballots appear in 5 different languages - one of which is English.
It makes perfect sense for an elected representative to want to learn a language, other than English, which is a primary or even secondary language if his/her constituents. Not to do that would be considered ignorance by many observers.
The criticism of people like this who want to learn Spanish has its roots in ethnic prejudice, IMO.

That's an interesting proposal. Would that include any sign with spanish words on it (like taco, or patio?)? Would we require mexican restaurants to change their name to english? Would El Chico have to rename itself to The Chico.
What would be the penalty for a business caught having a spanish sign?

Why would I have use for Spanish? Most Hispanic-Americans know English therefore we already have a common language to communicate in. English is our de facto national language not Spanish.
I've never come across a Hispanic who hates HIspanics more than you.

You are mixing apples with oranges here. I don't have a problem with foreign languages in an ethnic business neighborhood. The fact is that is is only Spanish being shoved down our throats out in mainstream America. Why is that unless it is to cater to illegal aliens who are mostly Spanish speakers or that it is a lie that Hispanic-Americans have assimilated linguistically into our society? It is outright discrimination against native English speakers to demand bi-lingual Spanish speakers to get a job in this country. Before you jump to conclusions I am retired but I feel for non-hispanic Amercans both white, black and Asian that are being discriminated against because they don't speak Spanish.
