Sad, hard not to get emotional when watching this.
If anyone is in the Chicago area, perhaps try and find this man. Take him to a church that has a community outreach program, willing to not give a handout but help him get back on his feet.
As a people, we need to do a better job with helping others. More churches should have outreach programs, not just for souls, but for humane needs.
I agree ... The situation is grim. But I fear many folks who would normally provide assistance to these churches and programs fear for their own abilities to make ends meet these days. Who are these people who will attend, and give to these additional churches? Here in NC, there is already a church on every corner. Will more of these tax-free enterprises really help the situation?
I see many churches adorned to the hilt. Gold ornamenation and breathtaking grounds. When the Vatican and others begin to liquidate their profuse wealth to provide for the poor, worldwide, I will begin to believe churches might be an answer.

Reason: Clarity
My experience with churches is that most of the modern churches feel that souped up sound systems, palacial sanctuaries and erecting 300 foot tall crosses out on the interstate are more beneficial use of their funds. Some of your smaller, neighborhood churches will give a substantial portion of their budget toward charitable causes. But well-heeled Christians with the monies to make a difference, by and large, do not attend those churches.
Is this like the man who didn't have any shoes and the cop used his money to buy him boots. Turns out the guy had a home compliments of the tax payer. He sold the boots and was back on the streets without shoes again.
