I often have my radio station at the local setting that plays for the most part new mainstream rock/metal like Avenged Sevenfold, Metallica, Lincoln Park, Seether and such
The weird thing is none of those bands are "new". All that music is at least 10 years old at this point. "Modern" buttrock radio has been stuck in this odd time stasis for a decade now.

For the most part Black Sabbath are credited with being the pioneers of Heavy Metal. But if you look at (or in my case learn) Tony Iommi's guitar work lead wise, you'll see that most of his solos are based around the pentatonic and blues scale which in the end goes back to somebody like Muddy Waters as being the true root of it all.
Even any band that comes out today, what little guitar lead work they do I hear them most often using blues licks in the lead.
Pearl Jam was no way metal, while they were tagged as "grunge" the blues are heard a lot in their songs which they were influenced by 60's and 70's rock more than anything just look at who they choose to cover when they do a cover, band like "the Who"
Even 80's rock/metal while using power chords and then the classical influence ala Malmsteen more often used the blues scale for lead work , I hear more blues scale in a Ratt, Motley Crue, or Judas Priest song then I do any classical harmonic minor or something

Not only that, the same guitar tunings pioneered by Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Muddy Waters, the same I, IV, V, chord progressions and still everything sitting in a 12 bar structure.

Music and talent, the gift that keeps giving to others regardless of nationality or ethnic origins but important to pay homage to roots.
In this case a example of a band that has hispanic ethnic personal origins, who's music clearly is influenced by blues and r & b who also incorporates hispanic flare, same could be said for Santana.
The Roaring Twenties has been seen as the birth of 'rock' music as we know it.
What's funny is that Rock music (regardless of the genre, they all come from the same spring) is derivative and came about as a result of Country music. Or something like that, I'm not entirely too keen, but it's what I've heard over the years.
I would say this thread begins and ends up with Jimi Hendrix, but there's so many more wonderfully amazing Black artists that it'll be an insult to them if that was the case.
The OP must be way young most of the big bands from the 60's contribute their music to blacks......the Rolling Stones have always claimed this and so has John Mellemcamp.
The OP might go back and re read the responses or at least tell me were you think they get offensive the first page was pretty mild.
I always thought Metallica started this kind of music along with Insane Clown Posse...........by the way this is NOT Rock 'n' Roll!!
